Mums E83 3.0D X3 has just been in to get looked at. Seemed to be in limp mode (wouldn't go over 70mph).

Come back as saying the DPF has had it (waiting to see the actual figures on soot level etc). Obviously a new one is obscenely expensive but is it possible to get a recon unit or even one with lower soot levels that could then be fixed? Just trying to offset the circa £4k bill for the bloody thing.

I realise they can be removed entirely but I doubt she'd go down the illegal route.

I'd have it removed and cleaned if possible - someone I used to work with had his sorted by this crew and was happy enough with the service: https://www.dackmotorgroup.co.uk/blocked-dpf

Cheaper to recondition. I used Quantum in Maidenhead a few years ago when my E90 330d dpf gave up the ghost at 180k miles. Cost less than a new one that’s for sure.

Yes, cleaning a DPF is possibly. To do it properly it needs the ash, what remains from burning the soot off, to be cleaned out. To do that properly it needs to be removed from the car, so ignore anybody offering do it on car.
