I've had my car in for repairs which required removing the dash (air con problem). Today I plugged my OBDII reader into the port and it won't connect.

The lights on it don't seem to complete their normal sequence. I wondered before I go back to the garage, if anybody knows anything to try to get it working?

It stays on red after this. Normally you get a bunch of different colour lights blinking.

edit to add: i've also tried my friend's obd reader and it has the same fault

Google "OBD 11 pin out" & check for 14v at the plug, IIRC there should be one permanent & 2 switched or vice versa.

Also worth checking you aren’t pushing one of the pins out of the OBD plug when inserting your reader.

Thanks both, much appreciated. I had a good look at the pins and couldn't see any bent or otherwise damaged. Still possible of course.

I've got the pinout and will get my friend to check that with a meter.

What's the car?

You must still have power there as otherwise the adapter wouldn't light up.

If the car is CAN based then you could check resistance between pins 6 and 14 when the car is powered off. Should be 60 to 120 ohms.

Thanks, it's a 2019 focus.

Maybe it's just the adapter they can be hit and miss.
Try a wired tool if you can get hold of one and see if it's the same.
