I recently bought a used Astra 1.6 CDTI Ecoflex. Shortly after, the engine light came on showing an error code for the turbo.

The garage I purchased the car from said that they will fix it but said it may take a few attempts. First, the turbo was replaced. However, the EML light came on again about a week after. Then the electrovalve was replaced. The EML light came back on again a few days later.

When the EML light comes on, the car seems to have reduced power/acceleration but drives fine before the EML light comes on.

Has anyone experienced this before with this car and know what may be causing it?

Best advice is find a competent garage who can deal with the warranty issue, or get a full refund from the dealer.

As it is quite clear the dealer has zero ability to diagnose the problem, and as always is just firing the parts cannon. Which is a road to nowhere, except extortionate cost and grief.

There is not enough info here to perform any sort of diagnosis that even a half brained technician should easily surpass with the vehicle in front of them.

And it would be extremely rare for the ecu to actually be capable of reporting a reliable code for the turbo being faulty.

What was the actual code or codes ?

I don't have a fault code reader. I believe from memory that when it was plugged in at the garage the last two times, the fault code was for turbo under boost.

specific codes are needed.

Then first step would be to verify boost, and all aspects of the boost control system. Could be as simple as a split or damaged hose, boost solenoid etc etc...the last thing anyone would change is the turbo itself right off the bat.

Fault codes:

OBD-II
P2598
Status: confirmed
Possible decryptions (note control module):
OBDII: Turbocharger (TC) boost control position sensor A, performance problem - signal low

Engine control unit
P2598
Status: DTC supported by calibrations, Current DTC, test failed since DTC cleared, History DTC, Test not passed since current power up, Warning Indicator requested.

What could cause this?

generic codes suck and can sometimes mislead, get a proper Vauxhall scanner.

And as said, there may be boost related issues, you need to test and diagnose the various aspects of the system.

Code readers do not fix cars, nor do they always tell you what the problem is. But they tell the technician at least an area to start looking and testing.

Hi,

I have the same car with the same issues. The mechanics I have been too just like to fix the problem and not find out why the problem occurred in the first instance.

Took the car to Vauxhall who immediately said that a new turbo was required. Took the car back to the dealer I purchased the car from who replaced the turbo for me FOC.

Car seemed much better and more responsive but after 2 weeks and a couple of long trips, the eml came back on and car power was reduced. Code reader was reporting P2598 again. Once car has been off for a while the eml goes off and car runs, alebit it doesn't seem quite so responsive.

My question is, did you get to the bottom of your issues?

Thanks

Marc

Hi,

My car hasn’t been to the garage since the original post. But the garage I bought it from are taking it to a Vauxhall specialist this week. I’m just hoping that as the turbo and electro valve have been replaced, they will now find what is causing the fault as it is going to a Vauxhall specialist.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the frequency between the EML light being triggered after they reset it is decreasing. When I bought it, I did about 800 miles before it came on. Then I did about 200 before it came one. Then about 100. The last time it came on after about 10 miles.

How long have you owned the car?

Hi,

Sorry for the delayed reply, I wasn't alerted to a response to my original message.

I have owned the card for about 2 months. The issue with the P2598 code has now happened 3 times. Initially, Vauxhall said that it needed a new turbo so I got this replaced by the dealer who I purchased the car from and the same error has reoccured. Vauxhall have offered to re-diagnose FOC because of this.

Have you had any luck with yours?
