I have just fitted quad sidedraught dellorto carbs to my rover 3500 sd1 engine the problem is when I rev the engine it sounds okay but then on overrun it pops back through the exhaust(on the passenger side only)I have checked the usual stuff, timing air leaks etc,but no joy, when I had my standard su carbs on It was okay, anyone got any ideas, gratefull to all replys David. ps the car is an off road project so I cant test it on the road.

Exhaust backfire on overrun seems to imply either a bad misfire, or an air leak in the exhaust. Hopefully just an air leak.

there are two types of back fire.through the inlet valve or through the exhaust valve.the first is lean mixture, the second is retarded timing.how have you connected the carbs? sounds like one is not receiving the fuel correctly.if you suspect a leak, spray some brake cleaner around the manifold connections.see if the engine note changes.oh a thought,is the fuel pump man enough? also check for back pressure/leaks in the exhaust system.

Thanks for the replys, both exhausts were leaking slightly underneath. I sorted this out now it seems a lot better, sorry to have taken so long to reply but work gets in the way.
