i have a renault clio 1.2 1995 (no modifications yet!)
so if i install these two:
K&N E-9136 (Replacement Air Filter)
K&N 57-0052 (57i Intake Kit)
what would be the benefits and dowsides? (eg. how much hp would i gain? what would the sound be like? how much will the fuel consumption increase?)
thanks for all the insights!

Not been nasty but where did you read that, the manufacturers website? K&N filters are meant to be "better" due to allowing more airflow for similar levels of filtration but the main feature of them is the ability to wash and re-oil them. Older cars see a dramatic improvement (due to the actual design on the airboxes/filters rather than the filter itself) but in reality if they were that good, why aren't manufacturers supplying them as standard?
To improve MPG? Use a lighter right foot and spend the £100 you'd pay on the new airfilter (and subsquent increase in insurance payments when you tell them you have a "power mod" on fuel. Far better idea IMO. If however you are really serious about improving MPG by modifing the car, then don't look to the engine, but look at what the engine is moving.
Take all excess weight out of the car, make anything that sticks out and increases the friction of the vehicle off (i.e. wing mirrors, aerials, scoops, spoilers...), get some new tyres with the smallest possible rolling resistance and make sure they are the required gearing (i.e. don't make them too large or too small), remove anything that takes power from the engine (i.e. stereo, electric windows/sunroof)...

well... i drive it in the city and it's around 10 liters per 100km... (25 us mpg / 30 uk mpg) www.teaching-english-in-japan.net/conversion/miles_per_gallon
to docevi1:
i didnt read it... some people told me... well of course, you can read some ""feedback"" here: http://knfilters.com/feedback.htm
but it looks pretty much logical to me that if you take a air filter which design dates about 15y ago, and replace it with a modern and more expensive one, some improvements are bound to happen.
also thanks for all the things you mentioned, i'll take my car to a diet now
anybody else has any suggestions? thanks!
and what about engine sound?

I've heard that fitting a main sail can improve fuel economy! If you're really serious you could add a jib and spinnaker.
I wonder how the plod would feel if people jibed up the M1!
EVEN if it did give you a couple of BHP do you think you would even notice it? As others have said, your'e wasting your money.
It just makes it sound different and it would appear that many people just like fitting stuff like that so their signature on a forum looks more impressive, like some sort of roll-call of crap they bought of ebay recently.
Eliot.
10000bhp 2L 4 banger, big silly gauges, silly aftermarket filter, running 100bar boost, massive spoiler, mega loud silly blow off valve, 4 tons of Amps in the boot.
(i think you get the idea!)

ive tought about it throughly and i plan to install just this k&n air replacement filter i mentioned above, for various reasons...
just another quick question: what would i gain if i install a new exhaust (some bigger-sporty one)? any other ways i could increase speed and acceleration?
essentially, im interested in all possible car tuning except for it's looks (body) and audio systems, so if anyone has a nice suggestion please do tell!
