Wiring loom tape

The previous owner of my golf repaired the worn loom tape with blue insulating tape. It looks pretty crap and isn't wound very tight and therefore holds water. Is there a specific type of tape I can use on a wiring loom or should I simply spend a bit more time doing a better job with normal insulation tape?

Edited to say: this is in the engine bay by the way.
