When doing weight comparisons you need to consider the 'state of dress'. What ancillaries are fitted, does the engine contain oil etc. Different ancillaries are going to be different weights so a dry specification with no ancillaries will give you the base line, then add the weight of all common ancillaries (starter motor, alternator, fuelling system, water pump etc.) to get a 'real' comparison.

Kevin,

thanks for the information!

I'm interested in dry weights.
so far i have come across the following engines

Duratec V6 3.0 (Ford) 160kg
3.0L (new BMW 3.0 inline 6) 140kg
4.2L v8 FSI (audi) 192kg

any dry diesel weights?

Thanks

1.4 HDI/TDCI (alloy construction) 98kg
1.6 HDI/TDCI ("" 120kg
2.7 v6 twin turbo (jag v6 diesel) 202kg (apparently the lightest in segment.
