my engine (Peugeot mi-16) idles smoothly, and will pull ok up to about 3k rpm, however, when any load is applied to the engine it sounds if if the tappets are loose and there is a metallic 'pinking' type sound, although the car still pulls strongly... Upon inspecting the HT lead for no 2 cylinder, I noticed that there was a small 3mm slit in the spark plug boot. Could it be that the HT charge is earthing itself prematurely to the cylinder head? I am planning on renewing the entire set of HT leads, although would be greatful if anyone has any alternative suggestions.
Many thanks.

Could this be over advance? Does anyone have any suitable timing figures for an Mi-16 engine (standard tune)

I personally wouldn't start twiddling until you have replaced the leads .

I would replace the leads first, if that doesnt fix it, check the plugs, then dizzy cap (if it has one!)

Then the dizzy, unless its totally electronic.
