Are there any FWD gearboxes from standard cars that can cope with 300+ ft-lb of torque all day without any problems ?
What sort of torque can Rover PG1/PG2 boxes cope with on a regular basis or with regular bearing changes ?

Try looking at the specs for bigger diesel saloons - I'd have thought that some of those must getting on for 300 lbs.ft of torque?

Even the humble Seat Leon 1.9 TDi is 236 lbs.ft (I happen to have a brochure in front of me, 'cos the Cupra is a potential company shopping trolley when I replace my current hack in August).

I'd guess you could exceed the torque of the production models' engines somewhat without too much unreliability, but why on earth would you want to be putting that much torque through the front wheels? Even if you are thinking of a mid-engined installation, a longitudinal gearbox installation (Porsche G50?) would be better.

As far as I know people are running Fiat Coupe 20VT's with well over 300 lbs/ft through standard gearboxes without any problems. In fact the whole engine gearbox combi seam to work fairly well with up to 460bhp tuned out of it.

If you are asking about Rover boxes, perhaps you should contact Andy Nichols.
He has been using the Rover engine in his Maestro and Rovers for some time now, and his engines tend to make a bit of power.
He has a couple running in the 11's, with some serious terminal speeds.

The 'box is to be mated with a 3.2l v6 with 10 psi boost and reving to 7,000 rpm so diesel boxes would be ok if the overall ratios are not too long legged or the final drive could be changed to suit.
Its in a transvers mounted mid engineed kit car but the torque specs for the rover box arnt that high so just researching alternatives in case it gets broken.

I second the VW/Audi suggestion, A6 2.5 Tdi V6 is very good torque and available in FWD as well as quattro.

As I said, Andy Nicholls has run 11 sec quarters, and his engines are making in the region of 500+, also using nitrous.

Being fwd doesnt help him, but he is definately putting some serious power through his gearboxes.

do a websearch and you should find some info on him...

A very good place to start would be a Getrag Ford transmission.

Here is a link to their website...

If you were looking to use one for racing type work an MTX-75 would be easy to source, adapt and get working. They also have a variety of gear kits available from Quaife etc, plus LSDs.

Maybe better looking at 'boxes from the big VWs, as audis engines are longditudinally mounted whereas VWs tend to be transverse.

you could use an EVO box with the rear drive shaft disconected. this is how some of the US tuners dyno them! these things can handle MAJOUR power and torque. on the down side, they are big!

Seconded I know cars putting 420+ ftlbs through the latest Getrag/Ford 6SP in a race enviroment without much trouble, so in a road enviroment they should be reliable.

Best Regards
Matt

Except the 'just replaced' Passat and Phaeton remember.
