Change Oil every 3000 miles?
As you can see I have been farting around on the web all evening, reading verious views on oil & filter change intervals. Again, mostly American, this is a long but somewhat informative article.

PistonHeads forums are mostly about how fast is good and where the cameras are but maybe this disucssion has already taken place (couldn't find it)
What do you favour:
Synthetic or "normal" (petroleum) oil?
How often do you change?
Filter same time?
Special filter?
I use the cheapest possible oil (i.e. petroleum) and change every 3000 miles with filter. I gauge that the oil will not totally have broken down in our climate by this time and I have no way of knowing about the efficiency or capacity of the oil filter so better to keep it new. Have taken two Toyotas over 160 000 (w. much hard driving) on this recipe and no evidence that I fare any worse than anyone else

I appreciate your inputs...

Good call! I looked at a few under google
e.g.
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html
although is written for US market, it talks sensibly about SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standard tests. Apparently 97% success for filtering 40 micron sized particles for paper filters.
Its quite interesting to read about some of the shoddy design (return flow of dirty oil and bits of paper! and glue! from Fram, for example)
lanciachris:
I agree that no form of proof is a little fishy, especially now that I read that 40 microns is standard partcile size for any oil filter. But time will tell.
nel:
very much appreciate the input (especially putting my mind to rest re: the light scratches. At this point I don't know which is the flow and which is the upcoming oil feed drilling but I guess a closer look at the Haynes man. will show me. But a very, very good point about this going straight to the cam bearings!
cheers
David

Depends how costly your engine is and how you drive it. In my Dax I change the oil every 1500 miles but it's driven hard all the time and it's only a small engine giving a good amount of power. In the Mondeo I can hear when it needs fresh oil, starts to get clattery, usually about 7000 miles. (OK, gets more clattery )
Use a good oil too, something like Redline. Cheap mineral oils may look Ok and feel like good oil but they're not the same thing at all when they get inside a bearing at 100C.
