Volvo V40 Flywheel/Clutch
Discussion
My father has a V40, which has a noisy clutch, it screeches when taking up drive.
So we have just stripped out the box to find the release bearing is fine, so is the pressure plate and also the friction plate.
What we have seen one the flywheel has us both scratching our heads.
The pressure plate doesnt bolt to the flywheel as such, there is another unit which fits via some sort of bearing in the centre to the flywheel.
We are guessing that this is some sort of "cush drive", due to there being no springs in the friction plate that we took out.
Any pointers would be helpful?
What is this on the flywheel and what is its design purpose.????

Sounds like it might have a dual mass flywheel.
As you say, it is pretty much to make for smoother changes, less shock loadings on the gearbox, and better crankshaft damping.
A lot of trucks use them, and now some passenger cars.
First I ever seen was a Twin turbo Supra....it was weird seeing a flywheel with moving parts !!!
Cant answer your question regarding the noise though.

The DMF could make that sort of noise as it winds up the torsion springs.
But it is more likely to be a degradation in the clutch linings that cause them to squeal as the clutch is taking up drive.
If the clutch cover is self adjusting then when you fit a new plate you will need a new cover. They are not adjustable.
When you go to fit the gearbox, apply grease to the input shaft THEN WIPE IT OFF WITH A KITCHEN TOWEL. It must be sticky to the touch but not smeared in grease. Some people are too liberal with grease and can cause it to fail very quickly. Then you need a new cover too.
I would also replace the clutch hydraulics when you do the job.
