ECU for Vauxhall Astra Van

Hi all, a mate of mine has an Astra van on a W plate and has been told he needs a new ECU. Now he would rather not spend the £730 that he has been quoted for a new one. Are there any cheaper alternatives, for example could he get one from a scrappy or are they tied to be unique to each vehicle in some way?

Chances are if you know the engine model (e.g. X20DTL for the 1998cc diesel then you can identify the ECU (Bosch MSA 15M in this example). I got this info off the net!
