Rover V8 and SU carbs

I thought the point of SUs on an RV8 was that they don't need tuning. The eight-into-one all but eliminates pulsing on the intake, so you fit a straight needle, set the jet height correctly and leave it the heck alone. I've got an SU in the garage which has run happily on half a dozen different engines ranging from a stock 3.5 to a supercharged 5.3 (paired up for the 5.3) without any adjustment.
