Can anybody help me?

Got an Air cooled 911 (993 '94 L) and it has developed a squeak around the main fan. It sounds like a dry bearing, but I'd like some advice before I take into the garage for repair. Anyone come across this before?

Try spraying wd40 on the belt when it's running (small amount) if the belt is old then this often takes away the noise. If it does then I'd recommend changing the belt anyway !

Have no experience of newer 911's, but am guessing the basic architecture is the same as older ones. There are 2 relatively common things it could be (other than belt) occasionally the fan rubs against the metal surround - should be obvious metal/metal rubbing if that is the case. More common is the alternator, which on the older cars is run off the same shaft as the fan. If the bearings in the alternator are on the way out, this would make the noises you describe.

Remove belt, spin pulley, check for noise.
