Anyone ever had a turbine wheel come apart for no reason?

Had it happen on the Saab last weekend - nothing has come from/through the lump and impacted it so I can rule FOD out. Looks like it could have been a fault in the wheel itself which opened up, was approaching 155mph when it happened so you could say it was under some load!

Cheers

Both compressor and turbine wheels can simply explode when oversped.
I think its when the tip goes supersonic.
Both do have speed limitations, and given they can spin at over 100,000rpm, they dont do too badly.
Rotational speed is one thing, tip velocity is another.

Some types do have a habit of doing it more than others. The IHI VF22 fitted to some subarus has a bad rep for the compressor falling to bits.

Garrett T3 unit, nothing special but not exactly stressed either, was blowing around 1.3bar at the time, probably 80,000 RPM or similar. Thats why defective turbine wheel springs to mind - everything was within spec!

Lucky it was the turbine and not the compressor wheel. Any other damage ?

Nope - everything else is peachy, drove the car 20 miles back after it happened. Wouldn't like to test how good the Lotus CC is at filtering bits of compressor wheel out of the inlet charge

Notice the lack of the G word anywhere on this ad:

That one sounds like a bog standard copy of a T3 "50" trim
Something like a 2wd Cossie would use perhaps, although obviously not a Garrett

Dont really see how he can claim it fits both a T3 and T4 pattern, as the T4 flange is considerably larger than a T3

The compressor outlet looks as if its designed for a particular application too.
No internal wastegate function either

From the casting, it says "MAster Power" which is the turbo's brand name, which I think are ok.

Not unless Turbo Technics have started selling gear via E-bay!
