Zetec 130 bhp starting problems

My GF's 1.8 16v Zetec escort broke down and now won't start at all. It will turn over, but not start, and on the rare occasion that I had to drive it, it was slow, much slower than it should have been anyway!

I was told it could have been a fueling problem (the fuel module). But a mobile mechanic who is usually pretty good said he suspects its the head gasket, as he got it started for a few minutes then it overheaded.

If anyone has got any ideas what it could be and what to try first that would be much appreciated, many thanks in advance!

As I have said on some of the other head gasket related threads:-

1. Check for foamy gunk in the header tank and under the oil cap.

2. Check around the head/block to ensure no oil is leaking.

3. Do a compression test will show if there HGF.
