A friend of mine has 96, 2.8 turbo diesel pajero inport with only 75000 on the clock, starts first time a drives well, except it smokes (black) under load and as soon as you back of. We have done the normal, fuel, oil, air filters, injector cleaner, cleaned out the EGR, taken it for a hammering up the m25, yet stiil it persists??? I had been told that when they are imported into the country they have pumps tweaked up for a bit more go. Is there any truth in this, if so is it easy to untweek?
P.S. we have checked it is not the turbo and have cleaned the intercooler and subsequent pipework!
Any ideas?!!
Thanks

Black smoke from a diesel means it's being supplied with more fuel than it can burn completely. You seem to have covered most of the ordinary stuff apart from the injectors - cleaner won't magically restore them to new condition, but they can be tested and cleaned thoroughly or replaced. Apart from that, this pump tweak does sound like it could cause black smoke. Not knowing that engine specifically I can't say how you reverse this. The other thing that occurs to me is that with a turbo diesel it makes sense to link the fuel stop to manifold (boost) pressure; if yours does, and the device is knackered and signalling higher pressure than reality, that could also cause black smoke.

Common fault on these is a leaky seal at the back of the pump, lets engine oil in to the diesel & causes it to smoke. You can check by bleeding off the diesel from an injector & see if its clear or not. Be warned you need to know what your are doing though.

Costs about £200-250 to rectify, be warned you WILL be quoted lots more from most garages. Go to a diesel specialist to have it fixed cheaply.

Mail me if u need a number of diesel place in the south/southwest
