I see both of these names used for 4 pot ford engines that are put in the Caterhams and other small kit like cars, what is the difference?

I thought Duratec was just a DOHC V6 but apparently it is also a 4 cylinder?

zetec and duratec are just internal brand names for the power units, the zetec name for the 16V petrol engines is gradualy being phased out in favour of duratec.
now we use zetec as a model level of vehicle, customers were becoming confused with the powerunit brand names.

hope that helps

The Duratec refers to the V6 as used in the Mondeos and the newer inline 4 cylinder engines. They are of all alloy construction compared to the Zetec which has an iron block.

the Duratec units are very light, about 95kg i think. thats lighter than the K Series (so i was told). it also has a very nice head design and the stock bottom end can take upto about 250bhp. it comes in 3 displacments (there may be a 1.6, dont know), a 1.8, 2.0 and a 2.3. the 2.0 and 2.3 are the best for kit cars. Dave Walker had one of the 2.3 ons his rollers and it made 270bhp adn around 200lbsft with few mods. these units really are good. the only down side is they are slightly taller than the older (and still very good) Zetec

hope this helps some. thanks Chris.

1.8l and 2.0l 2.3Land PZEV Duratec's are manufactured in Chihuahua, Mexico; 2.3l in Dearborn, Detroit and 1.8l and 2.0l in Valencia, Spain. Originally named I4 is now powerplant branded as Duratec. I had the pleasure of installing the Bearing Ladder assembly machines on the block machining lines in Chihuahua and Dearborn. Great project, great engine, great times. Mas Tequila por favor.

err - yes and no.

the 270Bhp engine was in Guy Evans (Nitron) car, and is FAR from just a few mods....

Excellent. Just the kind of stuff I wanted to know. Are bore/stroke and redline basically the same?

Well relatively few mods compared to that of the top end K series units. I think it was running bodies, forged bottom end (think the crank may have bin stock) and a little head work. That’s not that much compared to most engines in it class.

Anyone know of anyone doing these conversions for the Eilse? I heard there was someone that was offering a kit that used the stock box.

Thanks Chris.

I suspect the cams weren't stock either!

It's the same kit as in the Exige above, looks promising but not there yet. Chap called Brian Drought and Geary from Eliseparts are behind it I think?

So you know much about the American spec Duratecs? I need to scoop some info on the build quality of pistons, and internals and such on my Turbo Duratec Project on the American Duratec20.
