Hi All

I am after a very big favour off anyone that can and is willing to help. My sister has a Rover 214 which she had a reconditioned engine put in.

Unfortuantly the cowboys that did it did not have a 214 engine and put one out of a 414, so she has a K Series 16 valve Injection and so her manual does not cover the engine.

Boyfriend is going to attempt to change the head gasket otherwise its a new car.

Was wondering if anyone has a manual on dismantling the engine and could find it in there hearts to scan and pass on to me.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Donna

(Also posted this in the Engines Forum but thought would try my luck with you nice guys)

Sorry, can`t help with the manual, but can offer a word of warning......

If the replacement engine is more powerful than the original (maybe even if it`s not), you sister must inform her insurance company as it may lead to problems if she ever has to claim.

I would inform the insurance company of any changes no matter how small they may seem. It is better to be safe then sorry.

OK Donna, a truth session. These are powerful engines that pull well but have several design flaws and poor build quality.
If the head gasket is leaking then you will have to remove it, have it checked for flatness coz they warp very easily. If it needs skimmed it has to have only the bare minimum removed.
When you refit the head you MUST use new bolts because they stretch as you tighten them down and cannot be re-used; this is mandatory; do NOT put the old bolts back in!
You MUST renew the inlet manifold gasket, because the manifold is made of plastic and the gasket is just a thin rubber strip and perishes at very low mileages.
You need to get a camshaft timing tool that clips into the cam wheels BEFORE you remove the timing belt, preventing the cams from turning and knocking the valve timing out.
You can buy these quite cheaply in Halfords.
Do NOT turn the engine with the cylinder head removed, you can break the liner seals and drop water into the sump.
And finally, the soon as it's finished and running well, sell it!!
Good luck.

Thank you for all the replies and advice. The engine has been in the car a year nearly and all the necessaries were done with notifing the people needed.

Already got the new head gasket set and new bolts too, managed to get them from a place other than Rover themselves. Better than the £176 in parts they wanted!!!

Now for the test :s

Raindancer, for expert advice post your question here:
http://forums.mg-rover.org/forumdisplay.php?f=6

In fact, in another section in that forum there is a thread with photos of a K-series strip down, but you will need to be a member to view it.

It's the "Project 400 lifts off at last" thread in General Chat, which you cannot see unless you are a member. Ably and superbly moderated by a team including someone not so far away...

The thread is about a 400 belonging to the website's owner, he bought it off ebay after it was drawn to his attention....I think the ebay link was even posted on here at the same time.

Thought you only had to renew the bolts that had stretched beyond 9XXmm? (can't remember exact figure)

I have an elise s1 service manual as a pdf file, if you want to email me I'll reply as an attachment. I think the engine is very similar, other than the obvious displacement difference.
cheers
