Crazy question is it possible to mate a rover v8 to a ford xr3i gearbox, if so how and where can you get the relivant parts ???

Seems a fairly daft question, anythings possible, but no doubt the torque of the Rover engine will tear that little CVH gearbox apart.

Hang on boys it could be for racing.
We raced on grass with an Escort it had a rear engined V8 mated to a Renault (25?) transaxle and went like poop off a scoop. Fastest damn car off the line I ever saw on grass, could lead a race by the first corner even when starting half way down the grid.

Its not going in an escort dummy, in a kit car

Don't even think about it... It'll last about 5 starts then go bang! The Rover torque will kill it. Unless you get a 'box from an RS turbo, which should be OK. Depends on the state of tune of the engine etc.. etc.. etc..

The guys at TVR Power in Coventry showed me an Escort with a TVR/Rover V8 in it. SO it can be done!!

Depends if it was the Griffscort or not. This was a Griff 500 chassis and engine with an Escort body shell minus the floor plan welded to the TVR chassis. With this approach you can almost anything into anything else.

Know the guy Richard Moore that dis it. Now prepares Tasmin Racers...

How do you propose to bolt the said rover to the cvh box?
Problems such as the 1st motion shaft being either too long or too short, clutch will be a hoot, flywheel? Rover has a monsta.
I think youd be better off doing a rear drive conversion with this rover engine, besides itll stick out the side of the car if its not wide enough.
Better to use an Rs Turbo engine on the cvh box at least itll bolt straight in.

if its a fwd or transverse mid engine kit.why use ford crap?
when an alfa v6 will give better power and torque than a standard rover, will come with an almost of efi system, will come bolted to a 5 speed transverse assembly, and most importantly will howl at 7500 rpm when the rover is spitting out bits.
also its a whole lot easyer to fir an engine and box to a chassis that to fit an engine to an unknown box.
given the choice i wouldnt fit anything to that ford fwd box as it really is crap

sounds like a winner to me, there's RS turbos out there producing as much torque as a 5 litre rover engine, getting adapter plates made up is easy .. don't be put off, no-one would make anything if they listened to the sceptics.
best wishes and good luck I say!!

I'm ready to be shot down in flames here ..... If this arrangement is giong into a kit car then I assume it will be either front engined/rear wheel drive or rear engined/rear wheel drive?

If your set up is the former, how do you intend getting the drive to the rear? Does the 'scort 'box not have a diff' built in to transmit drive to the front wheels?

If its the second option, along the lines of a GTM Libra, would a Rover 827 'box not be a better choice.

Of course if its mid/rear like an Ultima then you would need a transaxel type set up with an in line gearbox and diff directing the drive accross the car.

Can you give us some more detail?
