The missus has just had her Volvo C70 T5 (2.3 Turbo auto)serviced at the local dealer. While there she was talked into having a simple 'trial upgrade' that was said to have been developed for the police. It said to give more low down grunt and doesn't involve any rechipping.

It is on trial, no charge and we can have it removed. Before I talk to them can anyone see how this is achieved with re chipping and can be done during the service? Ive not much experience with turbo engines and seems a bit unlikely to me.

I don't drive it much but I must admit when I took it out it seemed to kick down quicker, hold the revs longer and pick its heels up pretty sharpish. In fact I did a quick comparison v my 4.0l chimeara and between 2 fixed points between 30-70 there wasn't much in it (altough the chim wups its backside after that)

Any thoughts.....or is it a con and any improvement purely by the power of suggestion?

Probably just a software upgrade to the existing chip - sort of a "chipless re-chipping" if you will. I know it's been possibke with BMWs for a while...

Chipping can give good power gains on forced induction motors for sure...

It probably won't even be a software upgrade just a remapping that the police paid for. And then volvo will start charging £X's for the upgrade, probably at the police's expense!

may just swap the map to that of the manual as i think the autos run lower torque levels.

Could be as simple as increasing the turbo boost & set gain levels. The standard volvo is 0.6bar iirc-& can easily/safely handle 0.8+bar.
