Electric Power Steering
Discussion
Hi all,
OK, I know this isn't the correct forum for this, but I figured I'd get a better response on here.
Im after some info on fitting an electric power steering unit from a Corsa, or Punto onto my Dax Cobra. I need to know what the inputs to the steering ECU look like or what they actually are. Any sites with info would be great, I have searched and come up with no useful info,
Phil

We do the software for puntos and a few other electric power steering systems at work and I warn you that there are many technical complications with regards to electric power steering (Column drive anyway). If you can get a hydraulic rack to fit, would be much simpler.
Some of the complications include:
1. Mounting, behind the Dashboard (where they are usually mounted), needs to be very strong, there were many problems with the early test cars ripping the mounts out as some can generate that much torque.
2. Space although they are relatively compact i would doubt you would have much space for your legs after fitting and reinforcement after fitting it in a tojero. (I haven't tried, so wouldn't know).
3. Sensor information, as many of these systems are speed sensitive and require information from the engine, abs and other body ecus and if it doesn't receive it will not switch on in most cases if the information is not provided. Or run in a limited mode.
The fault management on them is very severe given that they can literally rip the wheel out of your hands, irrelevant of how strong you may think you are.
4. Tuning, the units are tuned specifically to the vehicle and go through months of testing (well except fiat! )
Personally I would recommend against it given the amount of difficulty we have with the systems at work with specifically designed equipment.
