I am having problems with the clutch on my 1997 (R) Renault Clio 1.2 RL Paris. When I set off in first gear and put the clutch down, move the gear lever into second gear, and then fetch the clutch up to engage second gear there is a clunk (sounds like the clutch plates coming together) from the gearbox and a brisk jolt as the car goes into gear no matter how fast or slow I fetch the clutch up. It does it just as the clutch bites when I fetch it up.

I had the clutch adjusted last week by a mechanic, apparently the self asjusting mechanism on the pedal was sticking. After adjustment, the clutch felt excellent.

Also, when I am driving in first gear in slow traffic the car jerks a lot with the clutch up even with revs. It is very violent and I end up having to put the clutch down.

Can anyone shed some light on these irritating problems? Driving this car is terrible because of the jerking and clunking. It has 71 000 miles on it and is still on it's first clutch. It bites well when I set off, but the gear change is horrible. How can I tell if it needs a new clutch, it's been adjusted and it was fine, but now it is awful again! What could the problem(s) be?

Probably clutch plate springs broken. Not an uncommon problem.
