Is there a mega list somewhere which lists a variety of engine specs? I'm a bit of a noob to the car world (biker) and I'm looking for a choice of engine for a kit car. Hopefully a later V6 or V8 with a minimum of 200bhp but reasonable fuel economy and rear wheel drive.

Any help would be appreciated

it's called pistonheads

Your here mate, so what do you need to know, might be worth a repost in general gassing.

If you only need 200 bhp may as well go for an off the shelf turbo lump from a 200sx, RWD & plenty about too. V8 route would be TVResque

V8 is a doddle.
Look at crashed TVRs and get the whole drive train.
or slightly easier, landrover/ range rovers.
Need to get a 2wd gearbox which will be an Lt77 from a Rover SD1 (not the Lt77 out of the landrover as that has the wrong output for 2WD); the later R380 as used in Tivs, Morgans et al, or a T5 as used in the Cossies, but you'll need a new bell housing.

This lot can all be sourced cheaply and has the advantage if you have a pre 94 engine you wont need a cat.

You can look at brand new American small and large block V8s but you'll pay a bit more but you get alot more bang. 350-450 hp is very easy, but your looking at a few grand.

Which kit are you considering?

I just sold my 200SX too - it had more like 300bhp with bigger turbo, injectors, intercooler, radical chip etc. It wasn't that good for low down driveability though - all the power was at the redline. The V6 route should give me a bit more torque without having to rev the nuts off it.

Some interesting ideas there Liszt - I hadn't thought about the TVR or Landrover options!

I am not sure on the kit as yet - might be the Mirach shown here www.rjhsportscars.co.uk/

The Mirach is looking to be more likely now but I am not too keen on the fact that it uses the older Pinto engine linked to a V6 box ... prior to SVA . The Pinto is a bit limited in the power stakes (probably only good for 140bhp if it's going to be reliable) and I would rather use something a bit more modern.

Does the Zetec spin round and connect to a V6 box?

if your lookinh for 200 bhp then i would go for a 2.0ltr Ford Duratec. speek to montune about thier 220bhp kit (around 3K i think) or speak to raceline. these engines are light and have loads of potential (inc. forced induction) and are in huge supply. alternativley there is the okder and heavier Zetec. cheaper and cheaper to mod though.

another engine is the 1.6 Toyota engine found in the back of the MK1 MR2. speak to Raw, also have a look in Prativcal Performace Car this mnth, there is an artical on the engine.

Vauxhalls 2.0ltr engines are another option. cheap and easy to mod.

any questions just ask, will try to help.

thanks Chris.

Just found a 2.5L V6 Duratec with 30K on the clock - complete with ECU and loads of gubbins. This should give me about 210 bhp as standard with the potential of an extra 40 bhp with a piggy-back ECU chip and decent zorst.

Seems too good to miss .......

OK guys, what is the most cost effective tuning path on a V6 Duratec? Nothing too radical - just enough to make it fly

I am lightening the flywheel to help the revs come quicker. What's next? Cams?

Speak to mountune or shawspeed, they seem to be duratec gurus.
