TVR 4.5 Engine cutting out
Discussion
Following on from a recent DIY engine install I now have the following issue on starting the motor
Background
Rover 4.5 BV engine, replacement jag flapper afm, jag injectors, larger plenum chamber, dist, ecu etc to replace a knackered 4.0 with a standard flapper, ecu, plenum etc
Now starts on the key but revs instantly to about 2 -3k rpm and then dies.
Will start again ,but dies as above
Seem to have fuel as can hear the pump working when ignition is on and the flap moved in air flow meter.
Have I got an earthing issue ?
Should the coil (attached to Rocker cover), afm be earthed (wire to chassis) ?
Faulty amplifier on dist ?
Could the static timing be so far out that just lucky it starts ?
If the ecu recieves too many bad signals does it just cut out ?
Or can someone point me in another direction to check and resolve ?

Yep your'e right - Flapper dosn't use stepper motor.
Its done via a bosch air bypass valve, sort of mechanical device with a bi-metalic strip in it, when cold it should be open, and close as it warms up.
Do all the usual stuff, check your static timing - try dynamic if it will run for long enough..

Could be an air leak causing the revs to rise, then it runs weak as it's not expecting that extra air, so it dies...
Yes I agree, check all your hoses and connections. Any leak downstream of your air flow meter would cause that problem.

sounds like a leak to me too, i had this and had to remove plenum top and reseal, the engine did exactly the same
does it sound rough when you can get it to run?uneven sounding.
get some carb cleaner and a mate.
get your mate to startit and try and keep it running, then squirt the brake/clutch cleaner around the inlet and see if it evens out.
Hope it helps
