I've got the Golf up and running again after it blew an air hose and it's running better than ever now apart from one little matter.

She keeps trying to overheat. The top and bottom hoses are getting hot so water is flowing through the radiator, the radiator gets hot, the fan comes on, the radiator gets cold, fans goes off and it repeats like that while sitting there idling.
However it's doing all this very close to the top of the temperature gauge? Running along the road, the temp gauge stays in the middle but as soon as I get into traffic it climbs again right up to the top. If I stop the car the fan is running as before and it seems to stay at that high temperature with the fan kicking in and out.

Could it be the thermostat? Although that has been replaced recently.
Airlocks?
Temperature gauge?

Sounds like it might have the wrong temperature rated thermostat or the the fan switch is turning the fan on too late.

If you bridge the fan switch so that the fan runs all the time, does she still climb up to the top of the temperature range? If not then change the fan switch. If so then it's probably the thermostat.

These 2 are cheap to replace - if that doesn't solve the problem then I'd hazard a guess at a clogged up system or feasibly a knacked water pump with a shagged impeller.

Best of luck
