So, this isnt something im likely to fix as its on my shed and I just dont care tbh - so long as it goes eventually.
But id like to know what the cause is likely to be.

Car is a 90 renault 5 1.1 shedmobile. Carburetted. When cold it will only start on the 3rd attempt - if you leave it cranking on the first or 2nd it wont go, but third time fires up straightaway. Other than this it drives without any problems.

Ive tried replacing dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads and plugs so far in my attempts to avoid having to remove the carb - which has a nicely warped base and so is a pain to seal properly when refitting. In fact, it weeps a very small amount of fuel even now, which may be related.

The choke is operating correctly.

Carb, theyre crap for warping on the base.
Renault dealer i once worked for used to pare the base of the carbs up with a flat file and replace all the gaskets. Used to work...for a while.

does using a file actually provide a good enough surface to seal? i had figured to get it solved properly id have to take it to a machine shop, and thus decided id live with it... if its just a bit of filing to be done maybe ill have a go

If you don't mind working at it then take a coarse grade of wet & dry and stick it on a piece of MDF.
Work the flange of the carb back and forth but change direction regularly.
