Greetings all,In the next few weeks I shall be changing out the original ceramic bladed turbo for a slightly larger (steel internals) Trust-Greddy TD05h.Original turbo is both;water & oil cooled,the greddy is oil cooled only(water is bypassed).I'm wondering about: the additional strain put on the oil/cooling/pressure system,& good place to put oil temp sensors,to keep an eye on it all? Is addional oil cooler absolutely necessary?
The;fuel pump,injectors,intercooler etc have been upgraded.Car in question is a '95 Nissan Skyline GTSt 2.5ltr straight six.Expected power output will be in the region of 320-350 bhp.
Any turbo changing 'trials & tribulations' info would be gratefully recieved.Many thanks.

I would make sure that the water cooling part WAS utilised, rather than dumping the heat entirely into the oil.
Turbo Technics built the hybrid one for the GT4 and even tho they said itll be fine to use it without watercooling, i reckon there has to be some extra reliability in there if youre cooling it more effectively.
TT also did the hybrid one for Der Golf and said a similar thing, but i piped coolant to it anyway. When youre spending THAT amount of cash on a part, you want to make sure its as protected as possible.

Same thing here TT stated it was optional to water cool mine, but I still did, just seemed foolish not too.

If you have the ability to (i.e. the new turbo has water cooling inlets/outlets on the bearings hoursing it seems crazy not to use it.

If the cars got a decent oil cooler on it all ready then I don't see it being a problem, maybe another 5 degrees or so increase in oil temp but that in itself shouldn't be a an issue. Its always worth taking an oil temp off the oil in the sump as thats the best reflection on overall oil temp, of course if you want specific temps of oil post turbo then its possible to take a temp from the oil return.

Oh its also worth getting some oil into the bearing housing before firing the car up, pull the fuel pump/s fuse/s and turn it over on the started until you see a touch of oil pressure (or for 30 seconds in two goes if you don't have a oil pressure gauge), you don't want the bearings in that expensive new turbo running dry!

Oh and drop me a mail about the old turbo with a price, if you don't want it I could well have a use for it.

Thankyou both,I'd a notion that,if I can plumb the water back in-I'd be daft not to-makes perfect sense.Matt the old M'bishi turbo has a few miles on it so will probably be close to needing some sort of recon job (the ceramics are rumored to give up the ghost very suddenly )But if your interested we'll certainly discuss when I can have a good look at it.

No problem it would be off to TT for a rebuild before I used it and would fit the bill for an LPT project I have coming in shortly where I need 0.8bar of boost in the shortest time possible.

Grin, grin, inane grin............
Just back from JAE show at Billing (I'll post some pics later prob on 'JAP CHAT').Had a great time-plenty of Skylines-saw some fantastic homespun turbo convs/hybrids & picked up some sound advice.
Matt if your still interested plz be patient,I have a track meet at C.Coombe on Aug 11 so will prob do the work the following week.

Its presently running 0.9 -1.0 bar & very quick spooler, hardly any lag,shouldnt be a prob.
