I'm not a marshall, but I think novices are usually put on flags - which is easier on a hill - someone stops, you put out the red one. Oh and blow a whistle.

I think Lord March has a dress code, esp for the revival and if you're doing "incident" I'd wear some nomex or proban etc!

You may wish to ask on www.ten-tenths.com

Much as we need the numbers, marshalling just to get a free ticket is not very welcome.
The only way for a novice to get to marshal at the FOS is to do all three days. If you consider this is one of the prime events, the number of applications outnumber the number of marshals places for once.

The bognor regis motor club do all the spectator marshalling, this might be a better bet.

I spent many years marshalling before the kids came along. Everything from Autotests through to Truck Grand Prix. You have to be prepared for long hours, take clothing for all weather conditions, put up with obnoxious know it alls who think they can stand/cross/go where ever they like, regardless of safety and consequences. But yes it does get you closer to the action.

Your best bet is to get in touch with the British Motorsport Marshalls Club (previously known as the British Motor Racing Marshalls Club) this is the governing body for marshalls. You are graded at all events you attend, whether racing or training days (which are I would say a necessity).
