Trip Angouleme Circuit des Remparts - Advice

Having completed the usual European events several times, a small group of kindred spirits have decided to attend this years Circuit des Remparts at Angouleme, having read about it for many years. While the location is more of a stretch to attend, the Sept date and relative anonymity is quite appealing.

The loose plan is a Portsmouth St Malo crossing Thursday returning to Blighty Tuesday, with perhaps a stop over en route to enjoy the French roads rather than a peage dash. Accommodation found in Angouleme Saturday/Sunday.

Question is from any seasoned attendees what hints tips & advice can you lend to plan the trip? Places to visit, best routes, what not to miss en route, recommendations as an event to attend, positioning, tickets, etc.... Any advice most welcome.
