Festival of The Unexceptional -29/07/2023
Discussion
Just a headsup for those of you who like stboxes that FOTU 2023 tickets are now available online:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/festival-of-the-une...
It's £27.54 per ticket, but that is on a per car basis, so the more you can (legally) squeeze into you car, the better the value.

Tried once again to get a picture of every car on display and failed massively... I always get distracted by something else and lose track of where I was... Still a fantastic show and I'd say well worth the ticket price, although I did hear quite a few people saying the concourse selection wasn't as good as it could have been...

Good effort with that! Do you do a reg check on every car to do the captions or just have far too much unexceptional knowledge?!https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAPf8J

Not sure that the E Type or the HF Integrale were ever “unexceptional”
There were quite a few cars that didn't seem to fit in with the theme, especially as someone turned up in a McLaren 720 and parked it at the entrance. It was mentioned by one of the organisers that the McLaren and certain other car owners need to 'read the room'. The 'Unexceptional' part is a bit of a misnomer, I expect what most attendees want to see (like myself) are things like the Yugo Sana, the trio of 'Tercels', the Renault 14 etc. These are exceptional, as they're so rare these days. Yes there were perhaps a handful or so of sportscars or regular classics that didn't fit the bill, but while they are unexceptional the numerous Volvo 850s and similar were not of much interest either as they're still fairly commonplace.
Still a great event though, I look forward to next year.

Catching up on this on the channel Furious Driving where there's an hour-long video.
I think the 'Unexceptional' part of the name is to do with how these vehicles may by some people's standards be deemed to be ordinary or not even worthy (at least not yet) of classic or 'iconic' status by their standards. E.g. a Fiat Punto convertible.
I think the variety this year based on the video so far looked pretty good. The occasional iconic car like a mk3 Capri 2.8i. A lot of Volvos, but generally it's nice to see that many cars within living memory that were simply scrappable at one point survived the apocalypse and are still being cherished, regardless of market value.

They do allow a bit of a grey area to extend beyond 'unexceptional' and into 'interesting' - I also think they have a bunch of spare parking down the end so they will let things on so long as it's not a car you can go pick up at a used car supermarket forecourt the same day. Last year as I went to the public parking they asked me if I wanted to display an 06 Legacy - yeah, it's fairly unexceptional even as an import but they're not exactly thin on the ground (or that old).
This year, it was stacked with Citroens i'd totally forgotten existed - parked at various ride heights
Thing I love about this show is there are so many car's i'd never have noticed in period or maybe even downright disliked, but they've now earned the time to have a little nose at. It's a living history kinda thing.
I really liked seeing a 7 seat Montego last year - I got carted to primary school in one on occasion. The bit that really drew my attention to it being from another era was the anchor setup for the additional rear seats. It looks like someone just tack welded a steel bar from the bottom of the boot window aperture to the roof and got a step drill out to make the appropriate hole in the trim to accommodate it.
