I'm curious on this – we used to only give around three weeks notice for a Sunday Service and had no problem filling them up.
But with life seemingly only ever getting busier, how much notice would you like for a one-day event?
We try to give around four weeks notice now for a Sunday Service (free/low cost event) and around two/three months notice for track days/evenings that carry a higher cost. Is this about right, or do you need more?

3 weeks notice is fine unless there's something else planned in so I'm probably less likely to attend, along with many others.
I think 1-2 month plus is better but ultimately, more notice means more chance of people being able to attend. It'd be great to have things planned for the year ahead and then reminders sent out nearer the time? I'm not sure I see a downside for having things planned in earlier?

I have no strong opinion as there are pro's and Con's to both.
The problem with "popular" Sunday Services are that there's a scramble to sign up before it fills then people go off to see if they're available and watch the weather. There is a significant minority who at best (despite all the reminders) take their name off the list after the joining instructions are sent out or at worst don't bother and simply no-show. This is very frustrating when you're no' 9 on the reserve list. The longer the notice, the more this happens.
With short notice, people are more likely to know straight away if they're free and are less likely to forget and not update if they can't make it.
I personally would favour 3-4 weeks for "free" and "popular" events (free and popular may have a positive correlation!) and "paid for" and "less popular" events a longer lead time (publish as soon as it's confirmed in house) to allow promotion and time to check availability as one won't stump up money on a "I might go". I think the Silverstone Classic is a prime indicator of that. Initially it seemed there'd be 10-20 of us going but as it got closer there was a good sign up and turn out. When there's money involved one takes longer to decide to go, when it's free, one takes longer to decide not to go.
Clear as mud?
