i had booked a ferry to UK, arriving from EU. Arrival would have been this morning 8:00 am, departure this evening 20:00
aim: collecting a car

now UK government decided that all travelers arriving to UK from france or NL should self-isolate.

the ferry-company immediatley offered a cancellation option with a refund.

as all ferries to UK have their starting point in france or NL (belgium ferries are actually out of service), this would mean that everybody is forced to self-isolate, even he would arrive from germany, switzerland, poland etc.?

the traveller has crossed F/NL and latest on the ferry port or during embarking he would have mixed with people.

section "transit stops" is not 100% clear for me. i mean who could guarantee that when i would have entered UK this morning, i definately could leave it this evening?

It's got a section just underneath for private cars.

As long as you don't stop to pick anyone up, or go mixing with others then you're alright to pass through France etc without having to self quarantine. I dunno about ferry specifics, I've not used one for a long time but I plan to go to Germany via the train in a few weeks, as far as I can make out it's all good, assuming Germany isn't added to the list!

You don’t need to self-isolate if you travel through a non-exempt country and you don’t stop in the country.

If you do make a stop, you don’t need to self-isolate if:

no new people get into the vehicle
no-one in the vehicle gets out, mixes with other people, and gets in again *

You do need to self-isolate if you make a stop and:

new people get into the vehicle, or
someone gets out of the vehicle, mixes with other people and gets in again

  • if i get out at the ferry port during embarking...i´m auotmatically mixing with people.
this said...how i can 100% prove that i did not make a stop during my trip through F or NL? (in case any boarder officer has doubts?)

The ferry doesnt count for the exemption, only the chunnel. Technically you need to interact with the french border before you enter the ferry terminal so it counts as stopping in the france. If you take the eurotunnel you do not interact with the french border until you are in a neutral type zone so you can arrive in the uk and not have to quarantine.
Its a very strange system. Gets stranger when you have pets.

i´m talking about NL Boarder (Rotterdam-Hull) and evtl. (for the near future) Belgium Boarder, in case P&O re-launches the Zeebrugge-Hull Service. both (Rotterdam & Zeebrugge) are overnight Ferries.
