I'm heading from Merseyside to Derby, on the Bank Holiday, and am planning on stopping for a picnic, perhaps in the Dales, but if there was a car show on, I'd take a detour.
Classic show on Monday 5th May at Thoresby Hall which is close to Ollerton on the A614, postcode for satnav is NG22 9WH which is an extremely popular event: http://classicshowsuk.co.uk/carshoweventsinformati... Went to this show last year and it was jam packed with hundreds of classic cars so well worth a visit. There is also a classic car show on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May at Bakewell in Derbyshire: http://www.spectacularweekend.com/
Haven't been to this show before so can't say for certain what it will be like but it certainly looks interesting. They even provide directions to the event at http://www.spectacularweekend.com/getting-to-the-s...

Yeah, that's the sort of pricing I like too. And fits in with the 'drive through the dales' I've promised the wife, plus they have a picture of scones, which will seal the deal. You could try the Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Show on May 5th. www.gawsworthhall.com
Should not be too far out of your way if you are travelling from Merseyside to the Dales.

Wow, thanks for the info about the Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Show which looks very interesting indeed, but unfortunately I won't be able to attend with the tribe because I'm committed to the show at Bakewell. Perhaps next time. Will pass your info onto our classic car club admin who organised the trip out to the Bakewell show.Should not be too far out of your way if you are travelling from Merseyside to the Dales.

So just an update on these two events:
The Bakewell event wasn't particularly well attended by classic car owners, and the reason may have been the draconian terms and conditions imposed by the organisers to any car owners who were brave enough to attend, which stated that all cars needed to be parked up by 8am and could not leave before 5pm. Won't be going there again. With hindsight we should have attended the Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Show!
And in stark contrast to the draconian rules imposed at the Bakewell show was the stunning Thorseby Classic Show we attended on Bank Holiday Monday, which was an absolutely fantastic event, with plenty of exhibiters selling their wares plus stuff for the kids and a vast selection of cars, vans and motorcycles from new to old to view. Nearly every car make was here to see. Like last September it was spectacular. Am looking forward to the next event in August

Well that's 5 hours of my life I won't ever get back.
Obviously 2 of those hours were wasted at the actual show, (Which was erm not as good as the advertising) 20 mins wasted not going into Buxton (I always bypass it by going via harper hill) 40 mins wasted in traffic head to and through bakewell, and an hour wasted in matlock and matlock bath.
But FFS, it took 1 hour from getting in the car at the car parking field, to getting to the A6, just 300 yrds as the crow flies. What piss poor organisation is that ?
Having spent a total of 5.5 hours in the passenger seat of HER mx5, my wife thinks we should sell it, as it's "not comfortable" ... so I've made her a cash offer, and she's thinking about it.

Think yourself lucky, we arrived as ordered at just after 8am and weren't allowed to leave till 5pm, which when you have a wife and two kids who have been up since 5.30am in the morning is a very long day, especially when they are not interested in cars. There were a few stands worthy of a visit, well three actually, one stand with a Aston Martin DBS, one stand with a couple of Audi R8's and another with a few Ferraris on show (including a rare Ferrari F40). Apart from that there wasn't really much on offer for a car enthusiast. The show was more focused on family than car enthusiasts. My wife and kids had had enough of what was on offer by 2.30pm so were well fed up when they learned that we couldn't leave till 5pm.Obviously 2 of those hours were wasted at the actual show, (Which was erm not as good as the advertising) 20 mins wasted not going into Buxton (I always bypass it by going via harper hill) 40 mins wasted in traffic head to and through bakewell, and an hour wasted in matlock and matlock bath.

Was interesting that they pulled the 'Health and safety' card trick to stop us from leaving before 5pm, perhaps a call to the local police station might have worked wonders in that department - quoting being held against your will, etc. which I am quite sure the Bakewell Council are obliged to comply with, whatever the insurance company say otherwise - showdown time sometime soon between 'elf n safety' and 'uman rites' jobsworths.
As for the one hour it took to leave, I put this down to the fact that as everyone was forced to leave at the same time via one road, the only possible scenario would be a major traffic jam. In terms of risk assessment, surely there is an increased risk of accidents when everyone leaves at the same time together with an increased risk of fires from classic cars that are stationary in the jams. Surely it would be more sensible to allow vehicles to leave in a steady manner throughout the day? Makes me wonder whether the insurance company may be liable for any accidents caused by their clauses in their insurance policies forcing organisers to stop vehicles from leaving early which in turn can cause accidents and vehicle fires?
Will cross Bakewell Spectacular Weekend off the list and perhaps attend the next Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Show or the Thoresby Classic Car Show which was absolutely fantastic and well worth a visit by anyone who is interested in car stuff.
Have enclosed a few pics I took at the Thoresby Classic Car show on Bank Holiday Monday.
