As a family we have been to quite a few events over the years, most commonly the Goodwood FoS. In recent years we've decided to spread our wings and try to get to as many events as possible. As i said we've been to Goodwood FoS and Revival. We've been to see drag racing. We saw DTM last year around the short Brands Hatch circuit. We managed to get to the Geneva Motorshow, as well as a few years ago we went to the Historic Pau race. We've also been to Cholmondeley's Pageant of Power and since we're located in the South we've been to the Wilton House Supercar day.

Obviously we've been to quite a few but we still haven't covered all the bases and was wondering if they are any musts for car/motorsport fans. Anything outside of Europe may be a bit of a stretch but i don't mind hearing about them. Two events which we've never been to are Le Mans and a F1 race. We can't decide whether it's better watching it on the TV or to go.

Also as it's a subject about events, what is everyone's favourite event they've been to?

I had been thinking of the Silverstone Classic in the U/K.
However each year it cost more and more to go weekend ticket looking at £190 WOW.
Then a local hotel £120 it all adds up. Plus fuel its not worth it for me.
I have found a few better shows over the last two years so bye bye CLASSIC for me.

There entry fee for tickets are OTT IMO.

Overall I would say LEMANS been there three times going next year as Porsche are making a comeback.

Le Mans not cheap either. Time everything adds up we are looking at 800quid easy.

On the topic of Le Mans. This might sound quite stupid but what happens when it goes dark? Do you just go back to your hotel? Or are there die hard fans who watch it till very late? Is there much do to outside of watching the racing? (which is fine in itself).

Its each to their own, make your own plans most camp sites have wide screen TV, food go back then rest then pop back out and see some more of the race.
Porsche Curves is a good area to camp near and view points.
BEERMOUNTAIN a good site about the whole event.

If you were looking at proper long haul then it would be Bathurst for me. Slightly closer to home, I organised a trip for 8 of us as a suprise for my mates birthday and we went to Eschdorf in Luxembourg for the first round of the 2013 Berg Cup and had a fantastic time. Being in Hull we went North Sea Ferries and called in at the Abarth museum in Belgium on the way down which was epic. Already had requests to do a similar trip next year and thinking of a round of the European Rallycross championship. Have also been out to service for some guys in our motor club on rounds of the Belgian Tarmac rally championship which is also great fun and most rounds are only an hour or two from the other side of the tunnel.

Nurburgring 24 hours.
It's like a music festival, only about cars. Utter petrol fuelled madness and fun.

You can make a nice trip of it - see europe as a road trip, do a lap if you're willing to hang about until the reopen the nordschleif for tourists.
Brilliant fun, would go again in a heartbeat.
Yep. Fantastic week.

Instead of spectating why not have a go yourself? The Palmersport driving days at Bedford Autodrome are brilliant. You get to drive some very quick cars and are encouraged to find the limits of the cars (and your abilities) by excellent instructors. This year will be my third visit.

Any car...we've had a smart car, fiat 500, beach buggy, Sweeney Granada, Peterbuilt truck!!! Its not what you drive its who's driving it. smile

As for the price, the Cannonball Run Europe uses only 5 star hotels & we also give a track day on a current or very recent F1 track. In the past we've visited Monza, Hungaroring, Imola, & the Red Bull Ring, check out the videos. I'd say the price is similar to a couple of weeks in Austrailia or a decent family holiday in Europe. (Remember thats £6500 for 1 car/two people)
Thanks for the help. Sounds like good fun, I'll have to look into it more. Thanks for all the suggestions!

The Silverstone Classic ( http://www.silverstoneclassic.com/) is definitely one of the better events in the Motoring Event Calendar IMHO

Cost can be reduced by going as part of an exhibiting Car Club. They usually do 2 for 1 tickets up until the end of May
