Has anyone been to the Mille Miglia recently as a spectator and can recommend a good viewing spot. We are staying near Lucca on hols and have seen mentioned on an old PH thread the Raticosa Pass, which is between Firenze and Bologna. Any other suggestions for good spots or does anyone know the form regarding how early you need to arrive to get a pitch etc.. Do they close the roads...Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

the recommanded spots are at the start in Brescia where you can see the car at the parc ferme, good occasion to talk to drivers and snap pics with celebrities. Other than that the best spots are on the south leg (go) the crossing of San Marino or if you have a car available the crossing of the Futa and Raticosa passes on the north leg (return). The final "good" bit to see the group is in Modena where you have the last time trial so cars, unless they are behind schedule, stop and wait for their turn to cover the special stage.
Roads are not closed but be aware that usually the police tends to create 20-30 competitors "train". They stop oncoming traffic and let them cross with red lights etc. Behind the train especially on the most intresting sections you can have a real race of non competitors trying to get in the best spot to take pics, hear the sound etc. In some occasion it can be tricky to stay in the flow and some light accidents occourred in the past. Also be aware of speed cameras, and no traffic areas, competitors can get through as they are escorted, but if you aren't careful you can get some nasty surprises.
That said is a wonderful event and something to do at least once in life.

As EnricoGTO ^ says it might be best to either see them depart or arrive at a location.
Brescia would be my choice as there's also the Mille Miglia Museum.
Futa and Raticosa are nearest Lucca but I suspect you'll see them fly past and that will be it.

If you are there longer then this might be worth considering as well http://www.motorgallery.it/4/ - we are going on the Sunday - UK reg, red Mazda Eunos, Moss and MeisterR stickered.
Enjoy.
Cheers, Pewe.

We are off to Mugello for the IMM (international mini meet) next weekend and will hopefully be lucky enough to see the cars come through - registered for a drive out from the show on Saturday to see the action near the Raticosa pass. Heading North on the Monday and may stop off at Brescia before a trip over the Grossglockner and into Austria for a few days, then home via the Nurburgring.
Very much Looking forward to the Journey.

Try to avoid getting in an earthquake in Modena, like I did last year following the Miglia.

Funny you should say that Madbadger ^^ - we were woken up by it at 0412hrs - and we were 150 miles away across the Golfo di Genova, near the French border!
Rattled the whole room and had all the fitted furniture creaking.
Must have been v.scary nearer to it.
Hopefully not this year but no guarantees.
BTW Lucca seems pretty immune.
Have you had the €10 buffet at the Antico Cafe in Lucca - sublime?
Cheers, Pewe.

We were only about 20km away but were in a tent in the middle of a big field, so while it was rather wobbly there wasn't really much to worry about. Didn't really realise how big it was until the morning.

I was in my bed, at home....
I was so scared I didn't moved for the following 15 minutes and the bed itself managed to move about 2 ft from it's usual position. And the two the week after were even worse.
Anyway for this year we are already ok since there was one last sunday....

We've just come back to our hotel after doing a recce in Brescia for the start tomorrow (Thurs). The place is buzzing!

We'll also be at a time control near Pogglioni on Saturday.

Green S-Type with PH stickers, if anyone's around.

I am in a lovely little hotel about 15km out of Brescia - my flight in got messed up and I missed having dinner with a friend, so dropped into a place to have a quick pizza. There was a very recognisable face on another table, spoke with an Australian accent - looked like Alan Jones.

I will be in town tomorrow looking at the cars and seeing them depart - may follow down to Ferrara in the evening then spending the next 3 nights with Maranello as my base. Have fun everyone.

Just in case anyone is interested we've spectated for two or three years on the GP Nuvolari which is a reliability trial in September.
Starts in Nuvolari's home town Mantova and normally goes via Autodromo Ricardo Paletti.
Entry is prob. as wide and varied as the MM but on open roads meaning you can follow them through.
We've had some huge fun even in a Mr Hertz over the Passo dela Cisa mixing it with the entry.
Goes to show how modern cars have developed as in a small people carrier (admittedly driven with some brio) we shadowed a 50's Ferrari and 60's Aston - epic!
See you there? www.gpnuvolari.it
Cheers, Pewe.

Dear all, just got back to Lucca today. Booked a last minute hotel and stayed overnight in Modena. We watched cars cross via Emilia and bomb up to the Museo Enzo Ferrari for the time check.
FYI anyone thinking of going, the hotel we found online CanalGrande was excellent, right in the heart of the historic "centro storico". 10 minute walk to via Emilia and 30 mins to MEF. Thinking definitely do again next year but will investigate staying in Brescia for whole duration. Did MEF and Ferrari museum in Maranello on Sunday morning. I am not a Fezza-head, but awesome anyway!!

The whole experience was just fantastic...........
Was at Mugello for the International Mini Meet but got taken out in a small group to watch the cars on the Futa pass.
Had lunch in a restaurant which was situated on a nice bend to see the cars in action - a procession of Ferrari's of all ages came through first and played to the crowds with an F40 stopping by the tables for all to admire.

After this came the historic Mille cars, most of which were being driven in anger, skinny tyres scrabbling for grip as the navigitors gestured slower cars out of the way. By this point Mille fans in all sorts of machinery old and modern were in the mix, awesome sights and sounds.

Driving back in the mini the streets were full of spectators cheering and waving, almost like we were taking part - a fantastic event and well worth the visit. Will post some piccies up when we get back to England.

The Mini experience sounds brilliant. Did you by chance see a green TVR Chimera chasing the classics through? We thought it may have been Garlick in the PH pool car!! We are off to Mugello for the Moto GP the weekend after next. Ciao for now!!
