I'm contemplating selling my car, It's a very high spec and the Ferrari dealer doing the service contacted me asking if I was interested in selling it. They then proceeded to take the p*** by offering 25k less than any other similar car on the market - despite them calling me and telling me it was a very desirable spec!

I've spoken to collecting cars and they said they would set a reasonable reserve (£20k+ more than Ferrari offered) but I've never used a SOR company and having seen the horror of customer cars disappearing at GVE who are the ones to be trusted?

I'm in central London.
Thanks

about 20 is a fairly standard dealer spread

looking at it the other way collecting cars buyer commission would be about ten grand so logically any bidder should stop at less than the reserve (which is not a guarantee) as its too close to retail

so if you can chip this or another main dealer a little the question then becomes whether you need a quick certain sale which would cost ten grand more than a possible sale with all the grief of dealing with both the sale process & the potential buyers

Speak to a few more main dealers Exeter or Swindon might offer you a SoR arrangement.

Note that dealers have high warranty extension costs on the car .

I’m not sure if CC are right offering you £5k less than advertised pricing of similar cars, with their 7.2% fees on top it’d be more expensive than those cars - with all the risk of buying at auction.

Whoever you use if not a main dealer then do a lot of due diligence on their financial position/Directors. Plenty of info publicly available these days.

Even then there are no guarantees as recent events and even further back for decades will show.

For peace of mind sell outright. £20k is a fairly standard Ferrari dealer spread.

To be clear, they were 25k back on the cheapest sold on Collecting cars.

Sold when and what car? If it’s a 296 they are dropping

Not SOR but try Michael at the Ventura Collection as they are buyers of high end cars and very good to work with.

Im surprised there aren't more recommended SOR dealers from people on the forum to be honest.

I've bought and sold several cars over the last 15 years or so with Nareman, at Nuvola London.

He's based in West London.

He's just about to receive my f-type convertible to sell. He's excellent at what he does, and I've always had great service from him.

I recommend him.

I trust Romans International and Bramley. Not saying you should, you need to do your own checks of course, but in my personal experience: top notch.

Whether they'll do SOR, no idea, but in terms of selling to them they are absolutely the best out there.

I gave you 2, I’d suggest you ask a main dealer to SOR the car for you

Also consider offering car outright to a top
end dealer - who I’m sure would jump at the chance if high spec and perfect. The two mentioned have deep pockets and I’d also give a mega shoutout to Top555. Dealt with them numerous times, they are blue chip & pay very well for special cars

Are you comparing their buy price to you versus sell prices for "any similar car on the market"

I'm going to suggest something crazy, which I admit will probably make me sound nuts.

You've considered selling on collecting cars, which means you're willing to sell privately direct to someone who wants to buy the car directly from you with no dealer services. You've considered SOR so are happy to sit and wait for the right buyer and aren't time sensitive. Could you not just do that but without the middle men? Autotrader and Pistonheads classifieds still exist.

I know, I know. Tyre kickers, time wasters, etc. But I have sold three Aston Martins and a Ferrari that way, and at most 3 people have come to see the car before someone has bought it, and all have been polite and respectful. If I had to describe my experience of selling such cars privately "easy" and "painless" both spring to mind. The worst that happened was someone agreeing a sale then backing out because they couldn't sort the money, but honestly it cost me nothing and the car sold successfully shortly afterwards to someone who bought it unseen over the phone, paid £8k more than I would have got through SOR, and collected it the following week. Plus I got to keep using the car all that time, rather than it being stuck in some dealership.

And yes, no buyer protections, no finance, nobody will do that. Except collecting cars doesn't offer any of those things either. Maybe it's not right for you, but I'm just reminding you that it still exists as a possibility and it really isn't the horrendous torturous experience most people seem to think.

I've never understood the attraction of funding a car trader's stock for them, especially when your downside risk is the total value of the car.

Sell it privately or stick it on PH auctions with a price expectation that's realistic. PH auction would at least weed out most of the time wasters and with a sensible reserve price you'd know exactly where you were.

This time wasters thing, I don't know if it's a real thing or something people just assume happens?
In my experience I handle may 10 phone calls when I advertise a car, typically no more than 10 minutes each just giving the usual details. I doubt any call has ever been more than that, usually less. Not one person who has come to see a car has come across as an actual time waster. If the cost of not doing that is £7200 to PH or CC for their auction cut then I'm happy do to the work.

I realise everyone else on here is a powerfully built company director, and 5 minutes spent on the phone answering questions about their car will cost them thousands in lost time not making deals.

"Selling a car via PistonHeads (PH) Auctions is completely fee-free for sellers (they keep 100% of the hammer price)."

If I was selling a £100k car I certainly wouldn't be handing the car, the keys and the V5 to any trader without payment in exchange.

I do agree with you that my experience of selling privately hasn't been as awkward or scary as some people make out. Just keep your wits about you. Or sell to a trader for the best price you're offered.

Thank you, the car has now gone to a main dealer. I think Ferrari dealer with warranty will command top money and even though they charge a fair chunk for it, overall the net will be higher.

Thanks.
