It is a truth universally acknowledged that a supercar doesn't have to be mid-engined but a hypercar does ?

I don't think so.

Exhibit A for the counter point.

I don't think there are any rules for what defines a supercar or hypercar, which is why even today people will argue over whether an R8 or 911 is a supercar and you'll hear people describe AMG GTs as supercars.

Also should F355s be downgraded to the category of sports car due to their lack of performance compared to modern supercars?

I shall contact the Galactic Automobile Authority and ask.

Hypercar is a stupid word imo and unnecessary given the word supercar already exists

Fair point ! However, that car doesn't have an engine, it just has an electric motor(s) ! Agreed, there are electric-only hypercars.

So, let me re-phrase the question - Does anyone know of a generally recognised hypercar (either ICE only or Hybrid) that is not mid-engined ?

I would say historical and current hybrid / ICE, mid-engined hypercar examples are - 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, LaF, F1, P1, Senna, 918, Bugatti's galore, all Koenigsegg's, all Pagani's, Valkyrie, W1, F80.

I’ve often seen this question so I’m going to chuck my 2p worth in.
A Hypercar definition probably has to relate to the initial cost, power and speed capability.
Should we say it’s 500k upwards and over 210mph?

Possibly depends if LFA falls into the category of Hypercar, as that's front engined. I suspect not and it probably sits in the Supercar/Super GT category.

whilst the 355 is a lust object and i would happily own one, was it ever deemed a supercar? surely a term only applied to halo models at that time?

but yeah the bar moves. the r8 being the curious case in point. released in any other era it would have been prime supercar.

I have a different question:
Have you ever met anybody who says they own a “hypercar” who didn’t immediately identify themselves as a complete cock?

Exactly.

hehe

Usually the sort of person that buys a house next to the REALLY nice area, then in conversation states they live in said area.

I’ve heard the SF90 referred to as a hypercar but never once in my almost 4 years of ownership refer to it as that as IMO it’s not.

IMO hyper cars are;

Bugatti
Koenigsegg
Pagani
F40/50/Enzo/Laf
918 (Carrera Gt I’m on the fence with)
P1

Feel free to add to the list smile

My view would just be price, supercars for mere mortals, hypercars for the wealthy elite.
