Hi,

I’m currently in the market for a Speciale, and ready to move on the right car.

There are 20+ for sale on Pistonheads / AT, but unfortunately none that match my spec. My spec is relatively basic (standard), and many examples have been for sale over the last 2 years, but I wasn’t in a position to buy then. I’m also willing to make sacrifices on my spec, but will be patient for now.

I presume many car enthusiasts on here have been in a similar situation - i.e - searching for a particular spec. Is it worth calling many of the usual garages and dealerships to see if they know of any previous customers, or is it usually a waste of time?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciate too - thank you.

it works, dealers have a good network of contacts - you'll always pay a premium for it though from my experience as owners know they have the upper hand and dealers also want an extra cut

I think cars sitting for awhile atm is just pure confidence that prices will rise, I personally think when the electric ferrari is shown it'll bump the special editions up by quite a bit

I'm not sure there will be many standard spec cars around.

When they were new, one of the criteria to being 'lucky enough' to get an allocation was how much you were willing to spec them up.
Many were loaded up with as much as £50k of extras.

Thank you all... much appreciated.

I've been looking at the market (PH & AT adverts) on a daily basis for the last 4 years, and thankfully in a position to buy now.

A few notes, if of interest to anyone:

01 - A lot of cars that are being advertised now, have been advertised for over a year

02 - A lot of cars that are being advertised now, are no longer in the spec that they came from the factory (i.e - wheels painted, calipers painted... and even the stripes painted on...)... I'm one of those annoying car people who want's the car completely original

03 - They are the only car (that I can see ) that has not changed price over the last 4 years... lots of cars increased significantly throughout the pandemic... then dropped over the last 12 months... they did not go up or down (on average) over the last 4 years

04 - The asking price vs 'sold' price is very different, especially when you see what Speciale's are getting on Collecting Cars
- I was bidding on the £319k red Speciale on collecting cars, and it was basically one other guy and me from £295k all the way to £319k where I pulled out... sorry to the buyer for driving the price... however my point is that Collecting Cars is a good indication BUT, all it takes is 2 people who really want a certain car, to drive the price passed where it should be

05 - There are 27 Speciales available in the UK now... and only 11 Huracan Evo's (I also have an Huracan Evo, so keep an eye on the market out of interest, albeit no interest in selling, as it is the last NA engine too)... however my point is that 27 seems a lot for a 'Special / Limited' car... especially when compared to 7 Scuderia's and 5 x Challenge Stradale's

Regardless of all of the useless info above :-) it's still the car that I want the most, and I'm not buying it with any financial / investment agenda, other than common sense.

Over the last 2 years, quite a few cars came up in my spec (Rosso Corsa, Blue Nart Stripe, Grey Wheels, Yellow Callipers), so I think it is worth being patient to see if another pops up... although fully aware it is a limited car, and willing to bend somewhat too.

I am not interested in the low mileage car, as I plan on putting as many miles on it as I can... the new 1,500 car that was advertised today is very close to my desired spec, but there would be over 5,000 miles on it within a month, so no point in over paying for a low mileage car.

Thank you for all of the help...

Is it worth putting some feelers out with specialists to see if they can source one? As you know, there might be owners who will sell with a bit of a nudge.

Re above….
3) they definitely dropped initially when Covid hit as I was very close to doing a deal at £250k for a car in the same spec you mentioned on SOR at a main dealer.
5) They are not a limited car, which I think is the problem. The limited numbered production Ferrari seem to be the only ones that really hold longer term.

Inevitably the problem is you just can’t put the mileage on them without decimating their value, which is obvious not an issue if buying to own forever!

Anyway, totally agree that reaching out to the dealers is the way to go but you'll definitely pay a premium for the privilege of talking somebody in to selling.

A bit late replying to this but I think that is what you would expect. Generally cars change hands less frequently the older they get. Also consider the difference in numbers. I haven't checked your numbers but assuming they are correct: 5 Challenge Stradales out of 119 = 4.2%. 7 Scuderias out of 164 = 4.3%. 27 Speciales out of 333 = 8.1%. Obviously that's without considering imports, exports, write offs etc. That is pretty much what I would expect. I'm too lazy to check Pistas but I would anticipate more cars for sale and a greater percentage.

With regards to the question of looking for a particular spec, yes you should contact dealers. It is more a question of you getting a call when they've got a car coming in (and thus getting an early shot at it) than getting an owner to part with a car they weren't otherwise looking to sell. In fact, just speaking to a friend today who was looking for a (different model of) Ferrari and got a call when a car came up so he was able to nab it before it got advertised.

I'd suggest contacting 'The Auto Lounge' if you haven't already done so, up in Scotland but don't let that put you off as they operate all over the UK and beyond.
Nice looking one here - https://theautolounge.co.uk/stock/ferrari-458-spec... - if not suitable they may be able to help find what you want.

Not great…

A well known car collector and member of this forum reached out to me a few weeks ago and said they were the other bidder (winner) of the Speciale that I was bidding on, against them back in February, on Collecting Cars.

He offered the car to me for the price he paid for it, plus the bidding fees, plus another £8k for work that was carried out on the car since.

I accepted the price, without any negotiation on the price, as it was the car I wanted… and started arranging my travel from Dublin to London to see the car.

Prior to travelling he struggled to give me basic information about the car, over the course of 4-5 days, and he struggled to give me a day that I could see the car.

We finally arranged for that Monday… I booked a flight for my wife and baby to come with me… rented a car… booked a hotel… then landed in Heathrow Airport to a text to say he couldn’t show the car to me today… then he pulled out of the sale when I questioned him if everything was ok with the car, or if he wasn’t committed to selling it.

Long story short… there is either something wrong with car or he just wasn’t committed to selling it… however he was very disrespectful of my family’s time, in addition to putting a lot of unnecessary costs on my family.

All could have been avoided so easily.

Wow. That’s mega unlucky & totally out of order.

Sorry to hear that.

Tbh I’ll bet he changes his mind in a bit and decides to sell again. Guys like that can be quite mental!

Don’t cut your nose to spite your face if you want it - but I would deduct the first travel costs on a second offer if he does decide to sell.
