Evening Fella’s,

I noticed it was getting a tad hot in the R8 cabin, so tried to turn down the heat and nothing changed…so I turned it off. Started up the next morning and the heat/cooling controls were dead (no red lights) tracked it down to a 10amp blown fuse on F8….changed twice and blows immediately upon ignition on. Arguably the fans cut in differently too.

Thoughts? HCV maybe, solenoid, control unit???

Its a bit of a st, especially when its so bloody wet and steamy ATM.

Cheers.

Phil

The HVAC control units are known to fail. Not sure if this would throw a code or not.

Get onto R8 talk Phil, this seems to align with what you’re seeing.

The culprit was the HCV….whilst in there I got it carbon cleaned, full service and mapped…. Hopefully pick up before the weekend.

But….the front diff died as well and is now being changed under warranty….I am wondering if the amount of judder on lock was the diff giving up, I know “they all do it sir” but it was awful even when warmer….time will tell I guess.

Also what HP would you expect a Gen1 to make, before carbon clean and remap? Its made just over 500 apparently before any work…which he said is good for one of these.

I think it had been remapped previously at MRC Phil, so it might be worth doing the carbon clean/plugs and getting it back on the dyno…

We did wonder Matti…due back on the dyno tomorrow now its all done. Did you have the figures from previously by any chance?

I think pre-tune it was something like 508 and post 585, didn’t quite do 80hp.. obviously this was on MRC’s dyno, can’t remember what they used. A lot of it is allowing the throttles to go beyond 80%.

My ass dyno indicated it was one of the quicker gen 1 v10’s I had tried hehe

Matti on his dyno its made another 50hp and similar torque. ..so a healthy gain and we know they all vary.

Still not back as the diff delivery has been a bit of a *uck about, but hopefully back by the end of the week.

But MRC lock the ECU, so no adjustment can be made without their input…I assume to safeguard their data.

Is it a V8 R8 that you have?

Just a quick question as to how often you are putting it through a carbon clean?
(slightly off topic I know)

Saw some youtube vids that suggest it will be every 2 years if the car is driven and not garaged all year long.

This is the first one I’ve put it through, I’ve not seen any history showing its been done before but it may have had one with the tune. Its a V10.

Interesting and at the same time annoying they’ve locked the ecu Phil, however I guess that confirms it had been remapped before.

Could Ricky not flash it back to stock and start again.

Just looked at mine. Was 525Bhp pre tune (Audi claim 518) and 565 post tune (I thought it was 589 for some reason). I've been told it is a mild tune. 47Bhp increase. JF Automotive of Kent did mine.

1st I've heard about a carbon clean - what's all that about?

The V8 is particularly prone to carbon build up on and around the valves.. It has been well documented and can often reduce engine power by as much as 50 bhp. IIRC, Ricky advises that it be carried out about every 20K miles.

The V10 also suffers from this but to a much lesser extent.

I didn’t get it to Ricky in the end Matti….the distance was too far, so its been with QST who have a very good setup…yeah possibly….could have coaxed more out of it after de coke I believe.

The figures were:

500.4 bhp
436.4 wp
459.6 NM @ 6495 rpm

After de-coke

555.1 bhp
482.1 wp
526.1 NM @ 6475 rpm

Yes I did put it through a full service, plugs etc as well, but seems no doubt that the V10 suffers significant enough carbon build up.

Impressive power increase. Clearly in need of decarbonising.
