After recently adding an F355 GTS to the fleet, I’ve been reminiscing about those rather common MR2 355 reps(I’ve actually already had someone asking if it’s an MR2 biglaugh ).

This got me thinking (dangerous, I know biggrin ), I’ve always had a strong appreciation of high quality replicas, but all the Ferrari reps seem to just be built on another car, whereas most of the other good replicas are built on proper space framed chassis’s (Countach’s, Diablo’s, Cobra’s, GT40’s, etc), even the 250 reps are on a BMW Z3!
So I was intrigued to know if anyone has ever seen a decent Ferrari rep on a space framed chassis?

Anyone who built one had it seized and crushed by Ferrari's lawyers.

As mentioned Ferrari brand police will go after any replicas..
There is an interesting Zagato called the Nibbio which is basically a reshelled 599, but there is not a single Ferrari logo:

Mercedes has also gone after people doing replica 300SL Gullwings.

It's not.

It's a nice enough kit, but it's not a convincing replica.

Things like the Nibbio are done with Ferrari's blessing, as I understand it. They're not replicas, they're rebodied Ferraris. See also Touring Superleggera's Arese RH95 and Aero3.

Seen that one before, whilst it’s finished to lovely standard and certainly a nice looking thing in its own right, it’s not an accurate rep as quite a bit is ‘off’ due to it being on a Z3.

Plenty of replica companies out there though, but they all use a donor car, think of DNA with the Toyota MR2 355/430, Peugeot 406 360 and Merc SL California……all of which look pretty horrendous! Maybe that’s it though, if it looks like a replica, they don’t care biglaugh

They have a problem with design infraction and misue of Ferrari logos.

See also: several long-established and well-respected Jaguar replica builders which have been closed down by Jag's lawyers in recent years.

Going after copying/infringement of the logos I understand, as that can leave a dangerous precedent if not. I don’t see the harm in replicating a car that has been out of production for several decades though. Beside, the buyer of a genuine example very different to that of a replica one (Funnily enough, I used to have an MR2, but if I’d of had 10-20k to throw at it, it wouldn’t of been on a 355 bodykit biggrin )

But when you’re talking vintage Ferraris, very few people know what the genuine article looks like to be able to spot the difference (or even know what specific model it’s copying). It’s not like a 355 or 360 where it’s something that you could have seen plenty of times.

There’s normally a couple of this type of car at Bicester and they get lots of attention from an audience with more than a passing interest in cars.

Some utter bell end went past me, then reversed and asked if my 430 was a Ford Cougar FFS.

I didn’t really know how to respond, beyond fk off you tt.

Generally replicas are very poor. There are a few good ones around, e.g Cobras

I’d guess he knew and just wanted to take a dig, the old R8 used to be horrendous for offensive comments, but the best was a guy who shouted “shame you couldn’t afford the V10”……….it was a V10.

So far, the 355 has only received positive comments, but it’s only been out a couple of times before being tucked away for winter, on the MR2 comment I had, the guy did compliment it first, before saying ‘please don’t tell me it’s an MR2’.

The wife gets asked "Is that a real M" when out in her Z4M coupe.

Response is usually "No, just the bodykit, engine, and chassis".

Not sure if you would include the Miami Vice replica given the small numbers and non availabillity of them.

The 365 GTS/4 Daytona, was built on a Corvette C3 chassis by Tom McBurnie of McBurnie Coachcraft, who apparently only produced two examples.
