Axe motorway speed limits
Discussion
Removing limits entirely would be a bad idea imo as there as too many utter throbbers on the roads already who would take that a a green light to go full on race mode....carnage...I think increasing the limit to 80/85 would make sense where appropriate. As for smart motorways there have been many deaths due to the live hard shoulder so jury is out on those tbh.

I'd like it to happen. It won't.German driving skills of the general population are much better than UK.
Look at all the numpties than sit in the middle lane not checking mirrors etc - can you imagine them being able to cope with volumes of 100+mph traffic on the same motorways?
Low UK driving mentality / awareness is why smart motorways are so dangerous as drivers can not cope with occasional stranded vehicles.
It will never happen, it would be political suicide. The first time someone "legally" doing 150+ loses control and wipes out a couple of dozen other cars would result in outrage and a backlash at whoever gave it the green light. Not to mention brake, ER and its subsidiaries, etc, protesting against it.
It's one of those vague statements politicians make to try and sound like they are on the side of motorists without having to actually do anything because they know they can just say fob it off as "not suitable" further down the line if anyone thinks to bring it up.
Personally it would be nice to cruise at 80-85 legally, but removing limits altogether would be a little terrifying I think.

Pretty much this. With a slight speed limit over read you shouldn't be in trouble if your speedo is under a tonne. This is perfectly safe when using judgement of what's around you, and the conditions. The Police should be concentrating on driving which is a danger, not arbitrary numbers which have no baring on safety. It will never happen. Shame.
Another reason it won't happen is that there would be environmental implications - it takes disproportionately more energy to shift metal through air at 80 than it does at 70 (and so on...) for little benefit. Would not be a broadly popular move, for this and the aforementioned safety concerns.
I can see that speeding will become more socially unacceptable for environmental reasons as much as safety in the coming years...

I'd be surprised if you could maintain a high speed given the quality of the roads. I flew over last month and was pretty shocked at how bad they are, let alone the standard of driving. It's bad enough in the US but I found it so tiring to drive even short distances on English motorways.

Likewise, but just as with smart motorways, UK is not ready for such changes.

Agree entirely, I've driven in Germany a lot, having overtaken, they immediately move back into the slower lanes - that's the discipline. It's in their skillset/culture. German driving skills of the general population are much better than UK.

UK drivers are generally of a poorer/lazier standard when compared to Europe.
Let's not get started on the quality of our roads compared to theirs neither
As mentioned the standard of driving in Germany is night and day compared to the UK.
I passed my first advanced driving qualification decades ago and continue to maintain the qualification with retests.
In that time the standard of driving in the UK has deteriorated to the point where even a short motorway journey you are guaranteed to see at least one or two near misses. Just an everyday thing now.

I agree that the UK has probably the poorest standard of drivers anywhere in the world especially on motorways. We also have a very unpredictable and quickly changing weather which can catch out even the best drivers let alone the poorest.I passed my first advanced driving qualification decades ago and continue to maintain the qualification with retests.

Unfortunately we have some of the most heavily congested motorways in the world especially compared to France which is the other extreme.
Its streesful enough as it is driving on our motorways as you constantly have got to keep a close vigil on other road users as they might be some of the idiots which cause totally unavoidable accidents.
However I still think our speed limits should rise to 80-85MPH in line with Europe.
I do 1000s of miles in europe each year, and I would say every country is better than U.K. for motorway driving.
People move out of the way when they don’t need to be in an outer lane.
The change in behaviour is both predictable and depressing as soon as you come out of the tunnel.
Our roads are very busy but drivers make it worse.
Having said all that, would be great to remove speed limits, but never going to happen! More likely we will be monitored to stick to the current ones

Would be wonderful to see and poor show from the naysayers here IMO!
Having driven on the continent a fair amount, while I agree that lane discipline is better in some places on the continent, road conditions, including some derestricted sections of autobahn are poor.
Additionally, simply derestricting doesn't mean that someone getting into an accident doing 150mph was doing that speed legally. Other laws apply such as dangerous driving etc. I'd also be interested in something similar to what the French do with different speed limits depending on conditions etc.

I’d personally love to see it
I reckon though as they say the limit is advisable there would be insurance and dangerous driving implications still come up if you’re bombing down the motorway at 150mph at 5pm however maybe removing limits at off peak times of day OR if they bring in road tolls which might mean motorways are much quieter
