Hi all I'm looking at buying a car from the Isle of Man. it went out 10 years ago from the UK. Its now back in UK but I'm struggling to hpi it as the records stopped 10 years ago when it left the UK .I'm pretty sure even vin checks will be the same as not linked to Isle of man. Dealer is getting wound up as ive asked for information and says I'm worrying for nothing . it's not chicken feed so need to get it right. As of now I can't get hpi I will have no v5 and be taking it away on Isle of man plates and vin insurance until the new UK v5 arrives? If a thats normal please let me know your thoughts

It's not normal, I think the dealer is being lazy - the vehicle should have been exported to the UK from the Island and an new V5C applied for using the IOM registration certificate and then issued - so it should be either fully reregistered in the UK or supplied with an IOM registration certificate and supporting paperwork so you can do the same (but buying from a dealer I would have expected them to have taken care of this):

https://www.gov.im/categories/travel-traffic-and-m...

I recently sold a car to a dealer in the UK and prior to doing so I went through the process linked to above to ensure it was properly deregistered on the Island and then able to be reregistered in the UK - which the dealer then took responsibility for doing.

Totally agree but I'm at his mercy on this deal sadly as I've been trying to source this spec car for over 5 years now

Had a similar problem with a IOM Ferrari 308GTS some years ago now,

I met the seller in north Wales in what looked like a rented cottage,

Can't say what exactly but something wasn't right, can't tell a book buy it's

cover i know but years in business told me nothing seemed to match up,

Did a silly thing and made him a low ball offer, sort of offer not to buy it thinking

he would be insalted but instead he said yes very quickly ,maybe to quickly,

With that i panicked a little and withdrew my offer until i could find out more about him if posslble and the car,

He became a bit pushy wanting to conclude the deal there and then because of the low price that was accepted

understanding that i would normally had got on with it incase of him changing his mind.

Barring in mind technology has moved on since then and even finding information on uk cars

back then was sketchy it was literally impossible to find anything on this car though the normal channels,

I walked away from the deal in the end and to this day i will never know if i dodged a bullet or i missed out on the bargain

of the century, Was interesting at a later date i shared this with a super car dealer on the great west rd in London

who i had sold one or two Ferrari's to and he said the description of the guy even down to his Rolex and Alsatian dog

fitted a custumer who had tried to scam him out of a Ferrari 400 ,he did report my incident to his local police but i never

heard anything from them, moral if there is one ,when in doubt leave it out, i suppose.?? rolleyes

The IoM is a VERY small place - you try using your mate's Shoprite loyalty card and it will take you an hour to explain to the checkout person how you met them, how the cats are doing, and whether his bunion has cleared up yet.

If you can find the right forum, either marque specific or a motoring one for Fraggle Rock residents, someone will know the car, possibly the original owner who might have sold it (or be selling on commission.)

This. The (super)car community here is small and most people know one and other. If it's a Ferrari, there are some well-known collectors and some who have a car or two. Lamborghinis the same etc. If you can disclose the car, someone who knows it will be along - or I can ask.

Or stick a post in the Manx Forums: https://www.manxforums.com/forums/index.php

Yup this. I am also Island based and buy and sell a car or two each year on and off the Island. It should be an easy and painless process. Anything half nice on the Isle of Man should be easy to track down. Give us a link or some details and we should be able to get the “skeet” as the locals say over here.

Many thanks for your kind offer. I've had to tread carefully as the last thing I wish to do is upset the owner or the selling agent. I think I'm there with it now and it's largely sorted
