Hi there,

I’m potentially moving to Dubai in July for a minimum of 6 months (and up to a possible 3 years) for work reasons.

I have a new Huracan arriving in August this year in the UK, and I’ll likely ship it to Dubai. I’m currently trying to figure out a lot of personal things about the potential move, and one being what to do with my new car.

A. Would I need to pay import taxes in Dubai?

B. Should I register the car as it’s first registration in Dubai or the UK (Is there any pros or cons to either option)? My dealership said that I can register it to either UK or Dubai.

C. What is the best way to transport a car to Dubai? Any shipping recommendations? I would prefer a method whereby the key doesn’t have to be left with the car and it being constantly moved (and no doubt potentially revved on a cold engine, etc)

D. Any other advice about owning a supercar in Dubai?

E. Outside of cars, any other tips from people on the forum who have moved to the UAE previously?

Simon

Just a quick thought - Is the car left or right hand drive? Not sure I’d be feeling that comfortable low down on the wrong side in traffic that can be pretty mental for 3 years.

Right hand drive. I’ll likely buy a G Wagon or equivalent over there, so it won’t be a daily.

Could you get them to deliver it straight to Dubai from the factory? Would be easier and easier they could sort out all the paperwork/taxes?

Sell it before delivery for a premium since there is presumably a very long lead and it'll just simplify your life during a huge upheaval

And leave a deposit for the successor when you return

You'd be surprised how trivial it is. I drove a RHD UK car in Italy as my only car for 2 years and the only time it even registered as being awkward was toll booths where you have to get out and walk around if you have no passenger.

Unless something has recently changed, you will not be able to register a RHD car in the UAE.

With a lot of cars Middle East spec will be different to Uk spec, more or larger radiators and different filters for dust, etc

Something you may need to look into

Sounds like a minefield, but a nice problem to have tongue out

Too late to change the order to LHD UAE spec? (gold wrap optional)

How long do you intend keeping the car and would you take it back to the UK if/when you return?

A: yes you will pay 5% import duty on the car and also 5% vat on the overall costs (inc shipping, clearance fees etc.). You can import on a Carnet for up to 6 months which avoids both.

B: you won’t be able to register it at all as it’s rhd and under 30yrs old. You could run it on uk plates for 6mths under the carnet.

C: CARS have recently opened a facility in dubai so would be the first port of call for enquiry. They can also advise on both points above.

Mr JWW flew his gt3 in using cars recently and has been driving it on UK plates, so assume he took the carnet option.

As for point C have a look at Shmee 150s recent videos from Dubai.

I believe he used Cars to ship his AMG GT out there and seemed very happy with them. Seen Through Glass also used them to ship his 911 around on his round the world trip last year.

Not worth just flipping the order when it arrives here and order / buy another for out there?

OP it's not worth it, further to what other's have commented Lambo Dubai won't touch your car unless you pay them ~80k AED for them to open the book on your car so your warranty is useless. You'll lose so much time having the car in transit back and fourth to the UK. Driving the car in summertime isn't great so your real window for driving is 8 months. Forget about carnet, people who drive here with UK plates are regularly pulled over, you certainly won't get anywhere fast. If I were you I would be getting onto Lambo Dubai today and placing a deposit for a new one here.

As others have said, surely it's worth either changing your order for Dubai spec and selling when you leave, or selling your car here when it arrives and buying something over there. 3 years isn't a short space of time so you might as well have something that suits where you are, when you're there.
