Usually do 3 roadtrips into mainland Europe each year either with my wife or a bunch of mates. After 2 years of road tripping in the U.K. I’m finally back on a road trip into mainland Europe. Oh how I’ve missed it.

Anyone else back in the saddle or planning one?

Tomorrow and Thursday

Picking Mrs Leg up at Alicante Airport Friday and viewing villas for a couple of weeks before she flies back and I take 5 days to drive back via the Pico Mountains.

Looks like fun. How long is the Ferry?

We've driven down to Spain a few times, but I never thought about taking the Ferry.

29 hours. Long but I would happily do 40 to avoid going through France.

We did 2 weeks in October through Spain trying to find the twistiest roads we could - trip report and loads of road suggestions here:

Only in a humble sports car but still amazing! biggrin

Humble my ass*. Nice pics.

  • This is neither a suggestion nor authorisation to come near my actual ass.

Yep, 2 years virtually to the day in September, down through Burgundy to the Riviera, across to the Dolomites, back up via Baden Baden, 2300 miles in 5 days, roof off every day, should have taken a couple of extra days really. Already itching for the next one!

Epic. I have photos in some of the same places!

Here’s one. Mine’s the green and yellow KT460.

We usually spend Christmas at our place in Colorado and the kids are old enough now for a road trip, so I'll take one there and the other on the way back while the rest of the family flies. I'm not hugely looking forward to a 2,000 mile trip but we'll space it out over a few days and might get my husband to do the journey back...

Lol to do a 2000 mile trip in Europe I would have to go from Rotterdam (Holland) to Moscow via Germany, Poland and Belarus.

Spent some time in Colorado in the Breckinridge area. It’s absolutely stunning there.

Great images.

I’m planning a European trip for next summer. Are there any useful resources on best routes etc?

The plan is broadly from Calais down towards Bordeaux, into northern Spain (San Sebastian stop), down towards the south of France and then along the coast towards Italy, few days in Tuscany and then back (potentially shipping the car?).

Mine will be going to sleep in the next week cpl of weeks.
Putting a plan together for next May/June though to head down to Brescia, across to Venice and Trieste, before swinging for home via Salzburg and Munich.

Yes, Breckenridge is very pretty. I take it you went skiing there? We're a couple of hours west and the whole area is lovely in winter and amazing at Christmas time.

Rotterdam to Moscow also sounds like a good trip idea smile

I plan a road trip to Europe every year, this year was slightly smaller due to restrictions but managed to stay around Interlaken, Grindlewald & Lauterbrunnen from here you can do the Grimsel, Furka & Susten passes in a 2-3 hour loop all day long, magnificent. Also great as a base is Cortina in the Dolomites where you can drive Falzarego / Giau / Pordoi / Gardena & Sellla in a big loop too.

For anyone planning a trip though this is the one I want to do next, possibly my favourite YouTube video of all time. 1958 Coupe des Alps.

How is it driving through Europe these days? Any issues at the borders with Covid checks? I’m planning a trip to Budapest for Christmas this year.

Everywhere we went was fine (not Hungary though), we got searched for Cheese at the Swiss border! However that does not go for getting back into the UK, absolute nightmare if you get anything slightly wrong, we were turned away at Eurotunnel and told to re-do our Covid tests at 7pm and had to go and find a pharmacy in Calais. No other country was the slightest bit interested but a Brit trying to get back to the UK is the most stressful thing to do.

Nothing planned this year but definitely (covid permitting) off again next year. No route planned yet other than it will definitely include 5 nights in St Tropez where we have a reservation rolled over from 2020.

Registering an interest here for the route pics and tips. I have a place near Alicante where I spend half my time so different routes and stopover points/hotels/restaurants/driving routes always welcome. Enjoy! Came back to the UK a fortnight ago and already itching to get back down there.

Thanks, good to know.
