My Golf R is a bit snug in my single garage, but I fancy an upgrade to a GT3 or R8 or maybe a 488 and worry it won't fit. Most of these are around the 1.95m wide mark, vs the Golf at just under 1.8m. What's the minimum practical internal width I'll need to get in and out of the thing, what with longer doors and lower sill?

At least 18-20 inches beyond the car so the simple way to assess is if you have that from the garage door frame to the side wall

That reminded me of JC trying to get out of a Ford GT on Top Gear.

My advice would be make sure the garage door frame (the entry part) is a minimum 2 meters.

Our Mclaren 570 just goes in with mirrors folded. Once in the garage there is enough room to open the doors.

Careful, this is how it starts.........one minute you are wondering if a potential car will fit, soon you are just making enquiries to dealers about widths of cars, they are soon popping over for a test fit and then 2 weeks later bam! Lamborghini Hurracan Performante sat on the drive and it still wont fit in the double door garage where only a year ago you upgraded both doors for electric openers censored

Not that you've experienced such a vague scenario yourself.....

I have a 488 I have to fold the mirrors back to get through the garage door which are 2200mm wide if I was building from scratch I would want 2300mm minimum. I am also lucky I have a wide pier between the doors which helps getting in the cars…

Don't forget the great British tradition of "carpeting the walls" and a "tennis ball dangling on a length of string". thumbup

Ha ha, done the tennis ball on a string before we re-built the garage.

Rather than carpet, I got a Lambo flag cheap on eBay and my wife covered some foam with it, so it hangs on the wall to protect the doors. A lot smarter than carpet and a bit more petrol heady.

Just out of interest how wide is a performante at its widest? Thanks

Do I win anything for tennis ball and carpets UNDER the car? :-)

I also have wobbly stop signs the flash LEDS if you hit them set 1ft further than after you touch the tennis ball. Last warning so to speak.

Just measured up and my door opening is 227cm - it's not tight to get in, I don't have to pull my mirrors in. But it's a little daunting at an angle, which I'm forced to approach at as there is a fence not too far in front of the doors. Particularly as you can't see the bonnet/nose.

The actual garage (was) 280cm wall to wall, and it would work fine to get out - I'd carpet the wall though! Obviously I've knocked through - got super lucky and managed to by my neighbouring garage for £9k :-) so I'm standing in the otehr half taking the photo.

Fortunately I had a spare commercial unit between leases so it ended up there for a few weeks whilst I had my relatively new twin electric openers and centre post ripped out and replaced with a big single opener. 1st world problems I know but be careful!

Full points for the carpet that looks like my Nan used to own, no points for the tennis ball as it has to be an old school white one for points.

Not that i know your setup but would it be easier to reverse in on an angle ?

Reversing? That WOULD be stressful!

It's an e-gear (r-tronic).

Probably the best car I've ever owned, on balance, and before the R8 (and I couldn't easily afford the R8 before)

The Griff was just a sublime ownership experience with one huge caveat. I enjoyed the spannering/fixing.

Once I'd got her sorted (big job replacing the cabin blower fan) - new roof, re-covered targa, re-leathered dash, new £600 alarm, she was just a superb car. Nothing quite like all that torque with no electronic aids. Many a power-180. Many a lovely drive to a pub in the country. All great reactions when they happened. Car felt small, and powerful.

I miss her a fair bit.

As someone who relies on a garage for everything, she'd have been a troubling ownership experience. For me it was fun. I sold her for what she cost me, plus what I'd added, and I enjoyed the fettling.

The Audi made her feel really really shoddy, which is unfair, as , as before that , she was my most favourite car.

Careful about quoted widths also. Some are mirrors folded out, others folded in.

From experience GT3's are quite a bit narrower than other 'supercars' For example a 991 GT3 RS drives comfortably between the brick pillars of mine with mirrors out as normal. Where as a 570s the mirrors have to be folded in and its very tight either side, like 15-20mm tight.
