As noted above, increasing world wide legislation on crash protection (esp. for pedestrians) control bonnet height & shape, light positions and almost every aspect. Then when a designer really tries to break outside convention and do something different everyone moans (720s). Its the British way, it rains for 8 months then we get one week of sun and everyone moans its too hot. These 3 cars are that week of sunshine......

Good analogy. I wish to add though that I am one of the few who doesn't moan when that one week of sunshine arrives. Bring it on. anonymous said:

All very valid points although I must confess to only seeing the new Ferrari and Lotus in 2D. I don't think its fair to properly comment on a car design until you've spent some time exploring how all the curves and lines blend and you can only do that when you get up close and personal with a car. Some cars can look terrible in the launch pictures only to look amazing in the flesh! So for the trio posted, I still think the images show that they are all equally impressive albeit they do look rather similar. The key will be seeing them parked next to each other and only then will you really see if the design of each is offensive to the eye, or pure beauty. In the past (and very much IMHO) Lotus designs have impressed in the advert photos, but look basic and overly simple in the flesh. McLarens tend to be the opposite looking bland in photographs but when you see them in the flesh all the complexity of their clever design starts to show. Ferrari have traditionally been that step up from everybody else, they have a pretty impressible track record of producing automotive sculpture and the 296 GTB certainly doesn't look like it will disappoint.
