Are Ferrari sump plugs different?
Discussion
Thanks for the reply. Sadly they don’t have any info on Ferrari sump plugs. I’ve now got a generic 14mm plug, but I really wanted to check on the correct size BEFORE I remove the old one.
The replacement sump plug washer that came with the 456 service kit from Superformance seems to fit the new plug.

You've got a Ferrari and you're just going to bung something into it without knowing if the thread size and pitch is even remotely similar?
I wish I had that much money.
Err no...I wish I had that much money.
I am asking the Ferrari community on here if sump plugs are all similar. If I need a 10mm nut on an Italian car I probably won’t order one from Modena or Maranello, as it’s only a 10mm nut and I can buy an identical one from another manufacturer.
I’ve asked the same question on Ferrarichat and the response was that a 14mm sump plug is the same as any other 14mm sump plug.
I can order a Ferrari part, but it’ll take a week to arrive and I’d like to change the oil today. I promise not to hammer in a plug of the wrong size!

Why do you need to change the sump plug to change the oil anyway? Its obviously holding the oil in currently.
I thought that it would be sensible to confirm that it was 14mm before I take to old one out. It’ll be easy to compare the threads when I do remove the old one though.
Older Ferraris use a brass like material for some sump and gearbox plugs and a previous owner has slightly rounded off the corners but using incorrect torque settings of incorrect tools. I thought that I’d replace it while I serviced the car.

As a mechanical engineer my ears were burning when you said this lol belfry said:

Baffling (pun not intended), the thread pitch, material, length of thread, sealing face, drive etc. can and will vary. Are you planning to change the sump and tank plugs?
The sump plug washer is 14mm ID 20mm OD, so I presume it's an M14 plug, and typically that means M14x1.5. BUT there are also sump plugs of M14x1.25 and M14x1 (at least). Yours looks like M14x1.5 though. Whether it's suitable is still a different question though.

I need up ordering another OEM brass plug from Superformance (£2.90 plus shipping) and a higher quality aluminium alloy one with a built in magnet (£19.00). The threads were identical but I ended up choosing to use the aluminium alloy one as it’s nearer to the material of the sump itself. I never understood the logic of mixing brass with aluminium on Ferrari’s.
