Why is the R8 regarded as a supercar?

This is a potential purchase and all the pundits say this is a supercar as opposed to a 911 which is regarded as a sports car, can anyone cast some light?
There’s absolutely no “official” definition of what a supercar is, and according to how a lot of people define them, an R8 does tick the boxes.Mid-engine, very high revving and high specific output normally aspirated, over 200mph, 0-60 in about three seconds, and designed to be about excitement.
I’m happy to class them as supercars, but am not going to try to argue with anyone who counts them as sports cars.

I regard the R8 as a supercar , looks like one , goes like one , that's sufficient for me .
Some here don't regard it as a supercar because it's an Audi , because Audi cannot build a supercar , despite the V10
having a Lamborghini engine that sounds awesome .
Will never afford to buy one , doesn't stop me from liking them .

The only people who say it isn't a supercar will never come close to owning any supercar.
I have owned cars in three of the current Supercar categories but do not agree at all with your assumption and therefore am very happy to comment that the R8 a big fast VW not a supercar I do not own one, do not want one, but have had lots of Porsche GT cars which I do not regard as supercars. I would still class the Audi as a supercar.
The reason in that it is not a superset of a base model. There is no line of regular cars underneath, such as a GT2RS going all the way down to a basic 911 for example. It is a standalone model, and has a unique appearance with great looks and performance.
Just my 2c worth.

Sounds like you're the one to tell us what the three categories are, and the definitive characteristics that define entry into each class Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
