458 Italia - Gearbox Issue

I have a 2012 458 Italia and have the gearbox warning light illuminated and gearshifts are jerky, slow and hesitant. Does anyone have any experience of this issue?
What is the general thoughts on if I should use a main dealer or independent? Could anyone recommend a good independent in the south east / essex area?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance!

No personal experience of this issue but it sounds like your speed sensor is shot. It’s a known problem on the early Ferrari DCT boxes (up to around 2012/13).What is the general thoughts on if I should use a main dealer or independent? The cable ties which keep the internal wiring become brittle in the heat of the gearbox and start to chafe the wires. Once the insulation is chafed through yoi start to get sensor errors.
The solution is a new sensor which costs peanuts. The labour to fit the sensor runs to about £7k as the gearbox has to be taken apart and it has to be done by Ferrari or Getrag. The sensor was designed to last the life of the gearbox and as a result, no thought was given to easy replacement. AFAIK, no independents are trained to rebuild the DCT gearboxes.

I’d be interested in learning how old that bill was. There was a time when any gearbox problem (which could have been fixed with a rebuild) was remedied by a total gearbox replacement (c30k IIRC). Ferrari then got Getrag to rebuild the boxes (still high teens money) but have now trained their own technicians to rebuild the boxes for a much more reasonable sum. The 6.5k quoted above is in line with what has been reported in the US and Europe for an official Ferrari rebuild. If your experience is recent, please share what was done and how much it cost!

I guess it could have been worse!

Out of sheer curiosity, is yours a gold car, I saw one on the A47 near Norwich a couple of weeks back that was struggling, really felt for the driver, its a horrible feeling when these cars go amiss.

Thanks Mike. No that wasn’t me mine is black, I don’t enjoy being seen in a Ferrari as it is let alone making it worse by having a gold one! luckily I was close to home when it started misbehaving. Hope you get sorted anyway.

This is why I chose to run without a warranty, The only other issue I’ve had was a replacement shock that cost 2k which I believe also wouldn’t have been covered by the Power Warranty. (And this just shows the knock on effect of said leaks)
If I’d taken the warranty cover for the last 4 years that would have cost circa 15k and then the gearbox and shock repairs wouldn’t have been covered.
It makes the Mclaren warranties look good value considering as far as I am aware they are bumper to bumper cover.
